Faculty Position Information:Position Title:Professor and Chair, Department of Animal ScienceAppointment Type:FacultyJob Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa seeks a tenured full professor and department chair for the Department of Animal Science. Nominations and applications for a visionary leader with demonstrated animal science and/or related experience in an academic, industrial and/or laboratory/research institute setting. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to continued excellence in discipline-leading education of undergraduate and graduate students, interdisciplinary and international research programs and relevant extension and outreach programs and diversity and inclusion.
The successful applicant for this position is expected to: -Provide visionary leadership for the department to serve the needs of diverse faculty, staff, students, stakeholders and citizens to fulfill the land-grant mission of the department, college and university; - Serve both the department and deanâs office in accomplishing their missions, and be a collaborative member of the collegeâs leadership team across all missions and 15 departments; -Stimulate and facilitate excellence and impact in all aspects of teaching, research, extension programs and outreach and service, among others by building highly functioning and cross-disciplinary teams within the department and with key partners internal and external to the university; -Recruit and retain the best possible people in all department positions, in line with the strategic plans of the department, college and university, while promoting inclusivity and diversity and a local-to-global outlook; -Recruit and retain a diverse and inclusive student body of undergraduate and graduate students who are prepared to enter the animal industry as local and global leaders and professionals; -Foster an environment in which all faculty and staff work to realize the departmentâs purposes and are held accountable for their performance; -Assist faculty and staff to obtain resources through extramural funding by encouraging a culture of collaboration and innovation; -Encourage and foster interdisciplinary collaboration with other departments, centers and institutes within and external to the university. -Communicate effectively the mission, vision and strengths of the department and college within Iowa State University and to external stakeholders and collaborators in the public and private sectors; - Nurture and maintain effective relationships with external stakeholders, including leaders and members of Iowa's animal agriculture and meat processing industries, organizations and the general public, to fully understand the challenges and opportunities they face and how the department can help to address these challenges and opportunities in animal agriculture; -Nurture and maintain good alumni relations and build alumni support through the ISU Alumni Association and the ISU Foundation to support the full spectrum of the department's activities, including raising funds for capital projects and endowments to support all missions. The Department of Animal Science (http://www.ans.iastate.edu ), administered by the College of Agriculture and Lifes Science, has a 121-year-old history of excellence in teaching, research and extension and outreach. It has international expertise in animal husbandry, animal breeding and genetics, animal nutrition, meat science, physiology, microbiology and immunobiology, biochemistry and the intersection of these disciplines with many other agricultural and life sciences. The department has a diverse group of faculty and students consisting of 53 faculty (tenure, tenure-track and term), 22 collaborating faculty and 76 staff employees. There are department has 1,000 undergraduate students with majors in Animal Science and Dairy Science and minors in Animal Science and Meat Science. The department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and has over 75 graduate students and multiple post-doctoral students and visiting scientists of assisting with research. The department hosts three centers serving animal agriculture industries: Iowa Pork Industry Center, Iowa Beef Center and the Egg Industry Center. The Department of Animal Science manages the Meat Science Laboratory and, with the college, the field stations for dairy, beef, equine, poultry, sheep and swine. Several of these facilities are in the process of being upgraded including the construction of a new poultry and swine farm facilities and new feed mill. Additionally, the department has a long standing relationship with the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the National Centers for Animal Health, the National Animal Disease Center and the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Ames. The annual expenditures of the department of Animal Science consists of more than $25 million in appropriated funds, as well as grants, enterprise and ISU Foundation funds. Resources will be available for the appointment of one or more Associate or Assistant Department Chairs from within the department to assist the Chair with administration of this comprehensive department. Required Minimum Qualifications:Ph.D. or equivalent in any of the areas of expertise in the department, or a closely aligned field, exemplary record of achievement or appreciation for all missions of the university and record of scholarship commensurate with a full professor. Must meet the university, college, and department requirements for appointment as tenured full professor. Preferred Qualifications:Demonstrated experience and accomplishments in areas of leadership, team-building, diversity, global outlook, budget management, and administration.
