
Associate Vice Chancellor Educational Innovation

The Associate Vice Chancellor for Educational Innovation (AVC-EI) will provide strategic leadership to creatively advance education at UC San Diego, to provide an equitable, high-quality educational experience for all students.
Under the direction of the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the AVC-EI will lead the Strategic Academic Program Development Initiative, designed to stimulate the creation of new academic programs and related infrastructure to meet campus priorities for access, academic success, enhanced reputational standing, and/or new revenue generation. The AVC-EI will also supervise and partner with the Faculty Director of The Teaching + Learning Commons, which promotes educational excellence through instructional development for educators and student academic support.
In addition to oversight of these two distinct programmatic areas, the AVC-EI will also provide strategic partnership to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of University Extension in support of the Division's move toward assuming a more central and inter-connected role within Academic Affairs, while maintaining its unique externally-facing responsibilities, and will play an institutional role by collaborating with University leadership, deans, college provosts, faculty, the Academic Senate and staff to co-create a culture of innovation in education that will shape future generations of responsible, compassionate, global citizens. In this role, the AVC-EI will convene individuals, teams and groups; drive conversations across the University; ensure follow through and execution of new ideas; seek to align existing programs; and promote the sharing of best practices around retention and student success.
Likewise, the AVC-EI will champion the development of digital strategies and introduction of new technologies to enhance educational excellence. Paramount to this endeavor will be a highly inclusive approach that ensures equitable benefit for all students to close achievement gaps and foster learning beyond graduation.
The AVC-EI is charged to: - Lead a campus culture change that focuses on student-centered pedagogy and student success, effectively communicating the imperative for change and driving efforts to gain buy-in from all stakeholders.
- Imagine and prioritize new program development and promote excellence in teaching and learning based on empirical data. This role affords thought leadership and strategic guidance to deans, department chairs, directors, and faculty members in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of curricula ranging from baccalaureate to doctoral degree programs.
- Shape a coherent vision for an educational model that blends the best of in-person education with the strategic use of digital learning approaches to promote degree completion, address the needs of a more diverse student body, and improve access for non-traditional students (including professionals seeking credentialed offerings and life-long learners). Specifically, assess and advise on how new models of high-quality digital instruction might become integral parts of UC San Diego students' education.
- Forge a tighter connection between teaching and research in the undergraduate curriculum and the focus in digital pedagogies to support enrollment growth and generate revenue.
- Support growth in the capacity for education research, ensuring data and learning analytics underpin decisions around the creation, modification or elimination of academic programs and support services. Guide the production of data and learning analytics dashboards to aid instructors and academic support functions. Promote a culture of assessment and continuous improvement; seek feedback and measure the impact and effectiveness of the strategies implemented.
- Capture and share best practices/lessons learned to ensure continuous improvement in pedagogical approaches and educational offerings.
- Strengthen communications between the university and K-12 partners. Share learning analytics and pedagogical approaches related to foundational gateway concepts.
The new AVC-EI will have a demonstrated record of scholarship, publications or creative works and teaching that merits a tenured faculty appointment as an associate or full professor, in the ladder rank or teaching professor series (security-of-employment) at UC San Diego.
They will have demonstrated knowledge of the scholarship of teaching and learning, intimate experience with and understanding of the academic culture of a research university and the ability to manage diverse stakeholders in a consensus-driven culture. The new AVC-EI will have the ability to lead institutional change and the demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to work in a highly collaborative manner in a complex and matrixed environment. Demonstrated experience with strategies for and assessment of technology-enhanced learning and a commitment to enhance the inclusivity and equity of the campus teaching and learning environment are essential.
Skills and Qualifications: The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications, characteristics and experience: - A terminal degree in their field is required at the time of application.
- A demonstrated record of scholarship, publications or creative works, and teaching that merits a tenured faculty appointment as an associate or full professor at UC San Diego;
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL), faculty culture and disciplinary approaches to instruction and relevant campus policies to ensure proper alignment of faculty development programs and services with institutional needs and evidence- based teaching practices;
- Demonstrated experience with innovative pedagogical methods, including digital learning strategies and assessment;
- A desire to lead in a team-based, matrix organization;
- Experience in a leadership position focused on teaching and learning;
- Experience with administrative, budgetary, human resources, academic personnel and financial resources and accountability for same;
- Intimate experience with and understanding of the academic culture of a research university, and the ways in which this position can enhance a teaching culture within a research university and make the connections between teaching and research;
- Demonstrated expertise building collaborations between academia, industrial and/or governmental agencies including grant, and revenue generation experience;
- Experience building effective community partnerships (e.g., with K-12 and community colleges) that promote an ethos of shared responsibility for developing the pipeline;
- Demonstrated ability to manage diverse stakeholders in a consensus-driven culture and align on strategic plans for digital learning - and experience successfully delivering on those plans;
- Use of technology for data collection, analysis and informed decision-making to promote academic achievement;
- Experience designing, creating, planning, and managing a professional development and training program that supports both residential and online learning;
- Ability to lead institutional change;
- Ability to foster a culture grounded in integrity and ethical behavior;
- A commitment to enhance the inclusivity and equity of the campus teaching and learning environment;
- Demonstrated political skills to develop and maintain professional relationships and work collaboratively with campus leadership, department chairs, school/divisional deans, college provosts and faculty at all ranks as well as other directors and managers in academic partner units, and community partners;
- Ability to relate to faculty with diverse experiences and technical capabilities;
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
- Excellent analytical, written, interpersonal, communication, consultation and presentation skills;
- Computer literacy and digital citizenship skills.
