Duties of a Registered Nurse- Acute Pain Service may include the following but are not limited to:
- Assesses the patient's condition and nursing needs; coordinates nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment effort to relate and integrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan for patients.
- Develops a written individualized care plan which includes teaching needs and discharge planning specific to pain management.
- Administers direct care when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed.
- Administers medications.
- Practices infection control and participates in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment.
- Assumes responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care, as it pertains to the APS, to all assigned patients.
- Participates in the development and review of outcome data/metrics related to pain management. Conducts ongoing review and audits.
- Acts as a resource to all hospital nursing and promotes ongoing nursing education regarding pain management initiatives.
- Management of patients followed by the APS including PCA therapy, peripheral nerve catheter and epidurals. Evaluation of intrathecal pain pumps.
- Coordinates aspects of in-hospital care relative to pain management with select patients with the nursing, medical and hospital staff.
- Maintains ongoing communication with physician collaborator / APS NP relative to select aspects of patient care.
- Works as a team member, communicating patient care issues clearly and in a way that is advantageous to the team effort.
- Provides documented evidence in the medical record of patient/family teaching and their responses and understanding of the teaching. Ensures the patient education and instructions are consistent with that of the physician or designee.
- Communicates and works effectively with other staff and other departments.
- Participates in unit or hospital based quality assurance activities or committees to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession at Stony Brook University Hospital.
Working Conditions:
Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. This position is classified by OSHA as Category 1
Qualifications
Teaching and Research Nurse 2 (Registered Nurse 2)
Required Qualifications:
Possession of or eligibility for a license to practice as a registered nurse in New York State and one year of post-licensure hospital acute care* nursing experience. A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing may be substituted for one year of the experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and at least three years of previous hospital acute care* nursing experience. Certification in specialty. Minimum three years critical care experience.
*Acute care is defined as medical services provided for illnesses that are short-term (usually less than 30 days), intense, and have a relatively severe to very severe course, requiring knowledge and expertise in the vigilant monitoring of subtle changes in the patient's condition, as well as ability to quickly recognize and identify potential problems and conditions resulting from a previous disease.
