Position Number: 40035 School/College: School of Education Job Description: The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for an Assistant Professor tenure-track position. We seek a candidate with demonstrated scholarship as an innovative literacy leader with visionary leadership to guide and lead the growth of our programs through excellence in the areas of teaching, service, and scholarship. Duties will include engaging in appropriate scholarly activities such as grants, presentations, research and publications in refereed journals, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, providing service to the university and the profession, and developing university/school partnerships to enhance programs. The UAB School of Education's Graduate Reading Specialist Program ranks among the top ten in the nation of online education programs, serving early childhood, elementary, and secondary educators. Candidates accepted into the program gain the skill set to develop, implement, and evaluate a variety of instructional literacy approaches for meeting the needs of the varied stakeholders involved in a student's literacy development and overall achievement. We are seeking a leader with a strong understanding of the factors involved in literacy development along with knowledge of the critical nature of disciplinary and media literacies. The Reading Specialist will work with program candidates, UAB faculty, and local school faculty and administrators to develop strategic and innovative practices to support statewide literacy achievement. The Assistant Professor will also provide leadership and oversight for all aspects of the Graduate Reading Specialist program, including meeting accreditation requirements, and state accountability measures.
