Organizational Overview

BNL Instrumentation Division is seeking a motivated electrical engineer to provide solutions-based technical support for a variety of challenging projects. In this role, you will be a member of a large team that is responsible for the design, development, integration and verification of complex systems. The responsible engineer will participate in the development of detector electronics (e.g. as needed for the sPHENIX, which is an upgrade to the RHIC experiment). You will also contribute to other projects managed out of the Instrumentation Division, including but not limited to the nEXO and AIT-NEO experiments. This position will report to a seasoned electrical engineer in the Instrumentation Division and have daily interactions with experienced scientists and engineers where he/she will receive guidance and mentorship to further develop knowledge and experience building scientific instruments.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Design and develop electronics for scientific instruments.
• Perform hands-on construction and integration of electrical components and assemblies.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose electronics failures for the purpose of performing on-site repairs.
• Design and develop test stands for the purpose of qualifying discrete components and electrical assemblies.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• At least 3 years related experience
• BS in Electrical Engineering or Physics or related discipline
• Experience in Automation and Control Systems
• Experience with modern analog and digital designs including FPGAs
• Software experience with C++
• Working knowledge and experience in electronics manufacturing and production test
• Able and willing to receive direction from senior engineers and scientists
• Excellent communication skills (written/verbal)
• Ability to make decisions and assume responsibility
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Strong computer skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Familiarity with low noise electronics and mixed analog-digital designs
• Experience with large scale detector readout electronics
• Some experience in custom IC design
• Experience in FPGA programming and data acquisition
• Rockwell Automation product experience
• Planning and scheduling experience
• Ability and willingness to mentor others
