Dept Marketing Statement
The Associate Director (AD) for Student Employment, Internships and Experiential Learning offers an exciting opportunity to operationalize the career success ecosystem at UC Santa Cruz. This work centers on the strategic implementation that expands the reach of career readiness throughout the student experience, team development and a focus on student employment, internships, and experiential learning.  These activities will align the team and catalyze the Career Success Team's vital role in creating social and economic mobility for the students of UC Santa Cruz.  It will also establish the Team and the university as national leaders for innovation in career development.

The Associate Director will be responsible for implementing and sustaining a new framework for student experiential learning activities, including oversight and stewardship of the student employment function, and cultivation and maintenance of a robust offering of on-campus and off-campus internships.  The Associate Director will hire and on-board new team members and train and orient current team members while maintaining high staff morale and standards.  The Associate Director will be responsible for stewarding legal and compliance responsibilities for the student employment which intersect with Federal Work Study regulations, FERPA, employment policy, and financial aid.  

Reporting to the Executive Director for Career Success, the Associate Director manages the student employment, internships, and experiential learning portfolio within Career Success. The Associate Director determines and evaluates procedures and practices for these programs, and recommends to senior management changes in policy. Develops the short term strategic and organizational goals of the unit. Has staff, budgetary, and other resource responsibility for the program. Represents the program in interactions with other internal and external organizations.  The Associate Director will be a mission-driven visionary committed to delivering exceptional experiences to students and prepare them for life after UC Santa Cruz. 


The Division of Student Affairs and Success provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs and activities across departments, divisions, colleges, and administrative units. The Student Affairs and Success Division includes Career Success, the Student Success Resource Centers, Dean of Students, Student Conduct, and Student Health, which all provide direct services and resources to students, and the Student Success Equity Research Center (SSERC), which provides data, research, and evaluation support for the campus and manages the adviser case management, early alert, and predictive analytics systems that are part of the student success initiatives.

Job Duties
50%: Oversight of Student Employment, Internships and Experiential Learning Functions
  • Develops, interprets, and administers student employment, internship, and experiential learning programs.
  • Ensures that professional and support staff are providing the full range of career services. Provides assistance, guidance, and direction on complex and particularly sensitive issues and situations. Provides feedback to management on gaps of service to clients, and recommends changes / enhancements to the program.
  • Ensures that all policies and regulations associated with employment, financial aid, and federal work study are adhered to within the student employment function.  Ensures compliance and risk mitigation initiatives are maintained at all times.
  • Cultivates partnerships with campus departments who supervise student employees, in an effort to generate opportunities for student experiential learning in paid student positions.
  • Stewards the student employment recruitment and hiring system, ensuring compliance, stakeholder engagement, and user satisfaction.
  • Ensures creative and innovative efforts are engaged in identifying paid and unpaid internships for students; guides and leads the internship coordinator team.
  • Ensures smooth working relationships with campus community members who supervise student exployees, Staff Human Resources, Financial Aid, the Colleges, Academic Divisions, organization departments, alumni, off-campus employers, and other organizations related to career programs and building the student employment, internship, and experiential learning pipeline for students.

25%: Management, and Supervision
  • Provides direction to career services specialists and career events specialist on the more complex issues encountered. 
  • Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
  • Recognizes issues that have organization impact or future implications and advises the managed employees accordingly.
  • Manages the accountability and stewardship of human,financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives. 
  • Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets.
  • Responsible for stewarding legal and compliance responsibilities for the student employment which intersect with Federal Work Study regulations, FERPA, employment policy, and financial aid. 

25%: Leadership
  • Leads and directs a team three professional staff and a cohort of student interns, establishing goals and priorities, utilizing data driven practices to determine programs and services, and engaging industry best practices in terms of building an experiential learning pipeline for students.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships and partnerships with university departments and off-campus employers.
  • Makes decisions on fiscal / budget operations.
  • Responsible for revenue-generation via grant development.
  • Serves on the Executive Director's leadership team and acts on behalf of the Executive Director in their absence.
  • Represents Career Success on various campus-wide and divisional committees and task forces.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
  • Knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice, and workshop and program design.
  • Knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.
  • Ability to design and modify computer applications and to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, organizational skills, leadership skills, and program development skills.
  • Strong ability to work with people from diverse cultures and collaborate with multiple and diverse constituents to accomplish goals.
  • Minimum of five years of experience within student affairs, career education and/or workforce development.
  • Minimum of five years of experience with leading teams, which includes supervision of professional staff.
  • Experience with effective change management.
