Over five decades, the anesthesia service at Stanford University School of Medicine has evolved from a band of a dozen doctors to a thriving department with over 200 faculty, staff, fellows, residents and interns. Stanford's Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine started as a subdivision of surgery, and is now a national leader in teaching, research and clinical service, ranking 3rd in the nation in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants. The road ahead will focus on growing this critical area of medicine through our three main missions of research, education, and patient care. The Department of Anesthesiology has a budget of $157 million, and encompasses the efforts of over 200 faculty, 140 administrative and research staff, and 60 per diem and adjunct faculty. The department of anesthesiology invites nominations and applications for the Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) to serve as the senior business leader. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and the Senior Associate Dean of Finance and Operations for the School of Medicine, the DFA provides strategic leadership for the operations, administration and finances of the department of anesthesiology. As the business partner to the Chair, this critical leadership position will ensure sound management of the department of anesthesiology and work with the Chair and faculty leaders on research, clinical patient care, and education programs and initiatives to enable the department of anesthesiology to achieve its strategic and operational goals. Additionally, the DFA serves as the liaison to the school and university in all business matters for the department. This position is a key leadership role for the department of anesthesiology and is responsible for creating a positive culture while striving for excellence in customer service for the students, researchers, physicians, and patients. The DFA provides leadership of all financial and administrative functions including: budgeting and financial management, strategic planning, human resources, research grant and contract administration, academic affairs, facilities/space, compliance, and safety. The DFA manages department operations, establishes the administration's organizational structure and environment, develops and implements departmental administrative policies and processes with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement. The duties of this position are typically split between 70% strategic and 30% operational, supported by multiple levels of professional and supervisory staff. As a clinical department, the DFA will also have considerable interaction with Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children's Health as well as the other two Stanford-affiliated health systems - the Palo Alto Veteran's Administration Medical Center and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
