PGY-2 Oncology
The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy
| The hematology/oncology residency is a one-year ASHP-accredited specialty residency at the South Texas Veterans Healthcare Administration. Major areas of clinical involvement and training are in malignant and benign hematology, medical oncology, blood and marrow transplantation, supportive care and prevention or management of antineoplastic and immunotherapy toxicity. Residents will develop clinical practice skills to become an integral member of the interdisciplinary health care team in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The hematology/oncology resident will collaborate frequently with other pharmacy and physician trainees and will participate in shared seminars with hematology/oncology fellows and physicians. Residents are also able to participate in investigational drug control for Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) protocols or in Phase I Clinical trials at NEXT Oncology. Residents will also be involved in chemotherapy regimen dosing and design via the Oncology P&T subcommittee. Additionally, residents will participate in nausea and vomiting prevention, pain management, infection prevention and treatment, therapeutic drug monitoring, extravasation prevention and management and hypersensitivity reaction management.
Graduates of the program will be prepared to provide clinical pharmacy services in oncology, hematology and blood and marrow transplantation in addition to being competent in written and oral communication, teaching, leadership and clinical research. Responsibilities and activities are structured to meet or exceed ASHP standards for oncology pharmacy practice. Residency training is provided under the direction of John Malamakal, PharmD, MS, BCPS, BCOP (Residency Program Director); Amy Morrow, PharmD, BCOP (Residency Program Coordinator); Sierra Vig, PharmD, BCPS, BCOP; Anndee Gritte, PharmD and M.
