OverviewDeveloping the future pharmacistAfter completing the 12-month PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Mayo Clinic Health System — La Crosse, Wisconsin, you will be a proficient independent general practitioner capable of providing broad pharmacotherapy knowledge to a multitude of patient populations. The purpose of the PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Mayo Clinic Health System — La Crosse is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists who are responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions and eligible for board certification and postgraduate, year-two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training. The PGY-1 pharmacy residency provides opportunities for general training in numerous areas of practice. During each learning experience, you work closely with preceptors, highly qualified pharmacists, providers and other allied health care professionals. Program historyThe PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Mayo Clinic Health System — La Crosse has been accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) since 2015. The residency program is continuously evaluated for improvement opportunities to ensure graduates make a seamless transition into clinical practice. Two candidates are selected on a competitive basis each year. Dedicated preceptorsAs a resident, you have direct access to skilled and dedicated preceptors and mentors to optimize your learning experience. All preceptors meet qualifications outlined by ASHP, and many are certified by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. FacilitiesMayo Clinic Health System — Franciscan Healthcare is a licensed, 331-bed, community hospital located in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and is part of the Southwest Wisconsin Region of Mayo Clinic Health System. Training for this residency program is conducted in La Crosse.

Eligible candidates for PGY-2 pharmacy residencies must have completed an accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency (or have equivalent experience) before starting the program. Admissions policyToday's allied health education requires that the accumulation of scientific knowledge be accompanied by the simultaneous acquisition of essential skills and professional attitudes and behavior. The goal of Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences programs is to graduate the best health care practitioners. Further, Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences must also ensure that patients are not placed in jeopardy by residents with impaired intellectual, physical or emotional functions. Therefore, admission to educational programs is offered only to those applicants who meet qualifications for education and training in the art and science of the respective allied health profession. Applicants should possess the following general qualities at all times:
You must be able to perform the essential functions of the profession and meet the standards of the curriculum. Residents seeking exceptions to these standards or reasonable accommodations should initiate their request with the program director. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential for success in the program and to ensure patient safety. Applicants must demonstrate objective competency in English through the admission interview and may be required to submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or equivalent examination. Applicants are judged not only on scholastic accomplishments but also on physical and emotional capacities to meet the requirements of the program's curriculum and to graduate as skilled and effective practitioners, with reasonable accommodations, if applicable.
