Duties:

The State University of New York at New Paltz seeks an effective, visionary leader to serve as the Director of the Center for Student Engagement.
We are a nationally recognized public comprehensive institution located in the heart of a dynamic college town, ninety minutes from New York City. A highly selective and diverse university, we enroll 6,700 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. This fall 46% of our incoming first year students are students of color. New Paltz is located on a beautiful campus in a picturesque area at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains with easy access to the City and nearby cultural and recreational amenities. We continue to gain national recognition by outlets like U.S. News & World Report, Kiplinger's Finance, and the Wall Street Journal's survey-driven measure of value in higher education that emphasizes student engagement, outcomes and campus climate, among others. New Paltz's mission and strategic objectives are supported by the core values of academic excellence, regional engagement, diversity and inclusion, and innovation.
The Center for Student Engagement is a newly formed department, effective July 1, 2020. The department strives to create inclusive and innovative opportunities for students to build connections and create community through meaningful involvement, personal development, and co-curricular learning. The Center oversees student leadership and activities, orientation and new student programs, fraternity and sorority life, community and civic engagement, intercultural relations, and Student Union Building operations. The department is staffed by an associate director, three assistant directors, two coordinators an administrative assistant and an office assistant, along with a graduate assistant and a student staff of Student Union Managers. The Director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs.

Duties:

  • Oversee departmental assessment, strategic planning, personnel training, annual divisional reports, and mandatory compliance reporting.
  • Monitor, manage, and serve as signatory on all financial accounts (total budget).
  • Advise the New Paltz Student Association, including, but not limited to, the Executive Board, Student Senate, and Council of Organizations.
  • Coordinate parent and family programs including parent and family orientation, parent and family weekend, a monthly newsletter, and explore additional opportunities to support parent and family engagement.
  • Partner with key campus stakeholders such as Undergraduate Admission, Student Success, Records and Registration, EOP, Residence Life, Office of Communication and Marketing, etc. for the delivery of new student orientation and transition programming.
  • Ensure the Center executes programming, support, and outreach to historically underrepresented communities, off-campus and commuter students, transfer students, graduate students, etc.
  • Promote volunteer, service, and civic engagement opportunities, including the delivery of voter engagement and registration efforts in coordination with key campus stakeholders.
  • Manage the adjudication process of all fraternity and sorority conduct violations, including the training of the Fraternity and Sorority Hearing Panel members.
  • Coordinate the annual Senior Toast celebration.
  • Lead the long-term planning and operation of the Student Union facility including serving as the primary point of contact on any facility renovation and construction projects.
  • Facilitate the annual training of all student clubs and organizations on issues related to risk management, hazing, Title IX compliance, inclusion, and positive student engagement
  • Oversee the consultation, review, and approval process of all student club events in coordination with key campus stakeholders.
  • Assist in the evening and weekend operations and supervision of the Student Union and student or departmental events.
  • Represent the unit at Student Affairs Area Directors meetings, Administrative Council, and other campus-wide committees.
  • Assist in the management of software programs such as ENGAGE, VisualZen, WhentoWork, in the delivery of unit priorities.
  • Work will include nights and weekends, as needed, to support programs and departmental on-call rotation schedule.

    Qualifications:

    The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of successful leadership within Student Affairs including strategic planning, supervisory, and budgetary experience. We are seeking a professional who values collaboration, holistic student development, diversity and inclusion, a responsiveness to individual student needs, a commitment to professional growth, continuous improvement, and service to the institution. Candidates should possess and effectively utilize strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. A master's degree and seven years of progressive responsibilities and leadership in student activities, leadership, intercultural relations, orientation or similar Student Affairs experience in a diverse higher education setting.
