For more than 100 years, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health (EH) has had a rich history of making important contributions to the understanding and improvement of public health through national and international leadership in research and education/training in environmental and occupational health. Through work in our laboratories, field studies, and large scale epidemiological studies, we explore the human health effects of environmental and occupational exposures. Our research provides the basis for environmental and occupational health policies and our teaching and mentoring produces world leaders who will continue to advance our knowledge of the impact of environmental and occupational exposures on human health. EH is a very large department that includes both wet and dry labs. The department itself has approximately 500 people including faculty, researchers, staff, and students. It includes both wet labs and (dry) workspaces that range in size from a single bench to 10+ bays.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Laboratory and Compliance Support:
  • Working closely with Longwood Area Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to oversee compliance of safety issues in 18 laboratories and workshops on two main sites; serves as the central contact and main point of contact for respective lab managers in regard to EH &S matters, ensuring appropriate updates are received by all lab personnel; helping resolve emergency lab situations; serves as a 24/7 Contact for laboratory emergencies.
  • Assisting laboratories with chemical and biosafety issues including chemical cleanouts, certification of biosafety cabinets, shipping issues and COMS regulations; coordinates large chemical disposals through EH&S and Triumvirate.
  • Maintaining training records for laboratories. Adding/removing personnel, and ensures compliance with all training regulations.
  • Assisting PI's with Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) controlled substance, and radiation issues, questions and compliance.
  • Attending monthly laboratory safety meetings and, becoming a member of the Laboratory and Biosafety Focus Forum, COVID-related committees, etc.
  • Assisting PI's and labs find the most cost efficient ways to purchase supplies, lab services and equipment.
  • Maintaining list of freezers, cold rooms and autoclaves; regular surveillance and monitoring of mission critical equipment including freezers, refrigerators, and incubators.
Equipment Management:
  • Maintain list of all equipment for the Department, including submission of equipment move, removal, and Equipment Management (online) forms, attaching inventory tags to equipment
  • Work with Equipment Management for auditing information
  • Scheduling maintenance of shared equipment (e.g., centrifuges, autoclaves, scintillation counters and spectrophotometers, etc.); organize and schedule shared equipment usage as needed.
  • Coordinating vendors such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians, HVAC personnel on any requests from our labs/offices for equipment maintenance, installation/repair of infrastructure; coordinating move requests for large equipment and disposal of materials, including biosafety cabinets and fume hoods, fridges and freezers, and other equipment
  • Keeping inventory of lab gas tanks; works with AirGas during any needed audits
  • Assisting EH personnel with shared equipment issues, such as repair or replacement
  • Working with outside companies/organizations for reuse/recycling of equipment that is no longer needed

PLEASE NOTE: Until our return to campus and full operational status, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will take place in a modified manner – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and a combination of remote and on-site (on campus in Boston) lab work. During this time, the shifts are also likely to be irregular (potentially including weekends and off-hours) and may therefore require schedule flexibility.

Duties and responsibilities continued:

Administrative and Operational Support:
  • Working with Department Administrators on space issues
  • Supplying floor plans to admins/PI's; maintaining and update space and occupancy records for entire department and submit regularly to Operations
  • Assisting with office cleanouts
  • Working with the school's Operations Department for scheduling, implementing and notifying personnel of renovations, shutdowns and maintenance work
  • Working with the Harvard Depository and Archives to ensure proper storage, transfer and disposal of laboratory and office records, as well as, other materials, such as, old equipment with historical significance
  • Tracking of phone and computer issues
  • Maintaining records of keys and accesses
  • Maintaining the website for the Molecular and Integrative Physiological Sciences program
  • Working with Account Payable as any issues of payment or receipt of materials arise.
  • Attending Eco-opportunity sustainability meetings
  • Assisting EH administrators where necessary, such as but not limited to time approvals, etc.
Onboarding Support:
  • Requesting temporary or permanent employee ID's
  • Giving initial program orientation to new hires
  • Requesting e-mails, keys, and access to labs and offices
  • Assisting with on-boarding including performing I9's; scheduling appointments, etc.
  • Adding lab personnel to training rosters and enrolling them in the required safety classes
  • Conducting tours of HCSPH and introduce new hires to EH personnel
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • 5+ years of related experience required; a combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment required


  • Bachelor's Degree is strongly preferred
  • Laboratory operations experience strongly preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory operations, safety requirements, training, waste disposal, protocols, controlled substance requirements, compliance, etc. strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with animal lab procedures, radiation safety requirements, trainings, etc. is a strong plus
  • Effectively communicates with all level of researchers (PI's, researchers, post-docs, students) and administrators; attention to detail; positive attitude and service-oriented
