PURPOSE: Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Facilities Maintenance & Operations and the daily work direction of the lead Painter, the Facilities Painter is responsible for performing a full range of skilled journey-level work in painting, finishing and maintaining a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and structures to ensure a clean, safe and attractive learning environment. Position makes decisions based upon sound maintenance practices. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Other Functions: Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the painting trade including painting, finishing, drywall, and paperhanging; and a thorough knowledge of the applicable state codes and regulations, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California. Ability to: be able to apply paints and finishes neatly and accurately; mix paints and finishes and match colors; erect and work from scaffolds, rigging and ladders; select the most appropriate materials; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate cost, time and materials of painting work; maintain records and retrieve data using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants in an effective and professional manner ; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Drivers License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to operate. Minimum Qualifications: The abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painters apprenticeship program. Specialized Skills: Preferred Qualifications: 2 years of journey-level experience as a painter. Special Conditions of Employment: PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Required to work indoors and outdoors in University buildings and grounds year-round, including during inclement weather. Includes working in the presence of loud noise, vibration, dark and/or confined spaces, moving mechanical parts, automobile exhaust, dust, chemical, and paint fumes. Required to work in elevated, precarious places. Work involves risk of being exposed to fire, electrical shock, and hazardous materials, such as, paint thinners, lead and asbestos. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position requires full range of motion, and a variety of movements necessary to perform strenuous manual labor, including but not limited to lifting and moving moderate-sized equipment up to 50 pounds (moving up to 100 pounds is required rarely). Position requires bending, climbing, reaching, moving heavy objects and equipment, and applying force. Requires use of a video display terminal. Standard vision requirements with/without corrective aides: Close (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Distance (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral; Depth Perception; ability to adjust focus.
