Western Extension Directors Association
Executive Director Position Announcement


The Western Extension Directors Association (WEDA) is requesting applications from qualified individuals to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of an Executive Director. WEDA is an association which serves the deans and directors of the Extension organizations at each of the Land Grant Universities in the western 13 states and 4 Pacific territories. The Extension system in the western region provides community-based educational experiences and impactful engagement through partnerships with the United States Department of Agriculture and the Association of Land-grant and Public Universities (APLU).

The WEDA Executive Director serves the association members through fostering effective communication and engagement among members; strategic advocacy for western Extension interests; and facilitating resource development. The Executive Director is responsible for logistical, clerical, and general administrative support of the association. This is a .75 FTE position.

Responsibilities:
The WEDA Executive Director is a politically savvy, visionary thought leader who represents the interests of member organizations while serving both the regional and national Extension organizations. Approximately .50 FTE of the .75 FTE of the WEDA Executive Director's efforts will have a Western regional focus, and .25 FTE will focus on the national level, as assigned by the National Executive Director and Administrator Team in support of the National Extension Section and the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy. Activities will include but not be limited to the following:

Regional Activities: (.50 FTE)
  • Initiate programming, funding, and advocacy partnerships for priority issues with organizations identified by WEDA.
  • Coordinate WEDA special initiatives and multi-state programming and funding opportunities by identifying and assisting with grant proposals.
  • Provide financial and budget management including collecting WEDA assessments and other invoices, paying bills, preparing financial reports, reconciling accounts, and developing budget projections.
  • Welcome, orient, and mentor new Extension Directors to WEDA, its work and purpose.
  • Work with WEDA Chair to develop meeting agendas and materials, and handle meeting follow-up.
  • Manage committee appointments - notify nominations committee of upcoming vacancies, announce and notify appropriate groups/individuals of liaison changes, maintain and post membership directories and committee lists.
  • Maintain and manage historical records for WEDA.
  • Hire, supervise, and manage staff as needed and as approved by WEDA.
  • Council and advise WEDA members.

    National Activities (.25 FTE):
  • Develop collaborative working relationships with Executive Directors and Administrator of other Extension Regions (Northeast, Northcentral, Southern, and 1890's) to maximize efficiency and provide effective leadership on national projects and activities as needed.
  • Advocate for Extension in the West by creating positive working relationships with key staff in APLU, Cornerstone Government Affairs, and other regional and national advocacy organizations. Build state/territory advocacy teams to work with University/College Government Affairs staff to promote Extension at the federal, state, institutional, county and local levels.
  • Assure a Western voice/perspective and visible presence with USDA/NIFA, APLU and other national organizations, insuring good communication and connection back to WEDA. Prepare WEDA ECOP members to be effective representatives of the West.

    Required Qualifications:
  • Earned Master's degree in a field related to the Cooperative Extension System and a record of professional achievement.
  • Organizational leadership and experience with the engagement functions of an institution of higher education.
  • Experience serving diverse constituents and an appreciation for the opportunities and challenges associated with the profound diversity of the western region.
  • An effective verbal and written communicator, able to clearly articulate a complex organization's long-term vision and strategy.
  • Exceptional leadership and organizational management skills with experience managing budgets with a high level of fiscal accountability and transparency.
  • Must live in the Western region and work from one of the WEDA member states/territories. It is not necessary to live in the same state/territory of the employment affiliation. The successful candidate will be employed by WEDA through a WEDA member institution.

    Preferred Qualification:
  • Earned Ph.D. or terminal degree in a field related to the Cooperative Extension System.
  • Organizational Leadership experience with engagement at an institution of higher education at a Land Grant University and with the Cooperative Extension System.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic advocacy, resource development, and organizational advancement.
  • A servant leader and organized facilitator of diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to initiate, cultivate, and maintain relationships on the regional and national level including with federal agencies and organizations, Land Grant university stakeholder groups, and other partners deemed important by WEDA.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the legislative and appropriations landscape in which the CES functions.

    As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will have the ability to travel domestically as needed and work on evenings and weekends occasionally.
