POSITION SUMMARY:

Obtains insurance information, referral forms and counsels patients on financial assistance when seen in department for services.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Responsible for training and orientating other Patient Billing/Services Representatives (PSR).
2. Obtains insurance information from patients and counsels alternative ways for financial assistance.
3. Responsible for completing daily alerts, tasks, and email requests for the Department of Medicine’s Medicine Multispecialty Center.
4. Obtaining and documenting in Epic necessary referrals for patient appointments.
5. Serves as a liaison between consumers and WUSM; assists consumers in a timely, efficient and courteous manner regarding appointment information, systems, procedures, and resources.
6. Takes any and all necessary steps to facilitate customer satisfaction.
7. Explains the relationship between internal and external customers and routes calls to the appropriate responder. Provides information on resources as appropriate.
8. Supports referring physician services function by addressing general calls regarding selection of primary care physicians, general questions regarding the managed care system and referring appropriate calls to the Patient Information and Referral Services Coordinator.
9. Schedules, reschedules, cancels, and confirms patient appointments and patient procedures.
10. Uses e-commerce real time eligibility to check for eligibility or check eligibility manually as needed.
11. Ensures appointments are scheduled appropriately in accordance with procedures to include referral and registration processes. Enters referral, pre-cert and pre-visit testing information in appropriate visit data fields.
12. Responsible for patient registration and updates of information.
13. Registers new patients in the Epic registration system as needed using mini-registration. Obtains complete and accurate demographic and insurance information.
14. Provides packet of information to patients regarding associated services which may accompany the appointment.
15. Assists with documenting and maintaining scheduling protocols.
16. Assists with obtaining referrals/pre-certs as needed.

• One year of related experience in a medical office setting.
• Epic/Washington University scheduling experience recommended.
• Working knowledge of general office equipment and computers. 
• Communication skills that require discretion with confidential information. 
• Able to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, have knowledge of medical terminology, and be capable of working in a fast paced environment. 
• Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills.

This position is in the Department of Internal Medicine - Scheduling Hub. This position is for the Medical School Campus.

This position is grade C06.

This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week.

The hiring range for this position is $15.85 - $19.43 per hour.

• High school diploma or equivalent high school certification with three years of experience in billing systems and third-party claims and/or experience in a medical office setting or related customer service/office experience.
• REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).
