This position serves as the Electronics Shop staff lead in the Department of Chemistry. The Chemistry Electronics Shop provides consultation, design, construction, maintenance, and repair services for electronic instrumentation and laboratory and individual computers in support of the Department’s research and educational missions. This position is responsible for overseeing the shop’s workflow and for maintaining shop component billing records. This position also has responsibility for the design, construction, and maintenance of electronic equipment used for chemistry research, and for consulting with scientists concerning the applications of such equipment.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee Electronics Shop operations and workflow, including work performed by other employees.
  • Submit component billing records to the Chemistry Purchasing & Accounting office. Maintain billing records for components used in projects.
  • In consultation with faculty and/or technical staff, design, prototype, and construct custom electronic equipment, from previously prepared schematics or from general specifications.
  • Consult with students and researchers regarding operational issues with research instrumentation.
  • Trouble-shoot the repair of complex scientific instrumentation to the component level.
  • Employ CAD tools for schematic capture, programmable logic design, circuit simulation, and the design and layout of circuit boards.
  • Select and procure electronic components for specific projects and to maintain shop inventory.
  • Perform other duties as required.

    Supervision Received
    Under the supervision of the Director of Technical Services, this position is expected to perform primary duties with minimal supervision.

    Supervision Exercised
    This position serves as staff lead for the Electronics Shop. May supervise student workers.

    REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering, an appropriate engineering field (e.g., electrical engineering, computer science), or relevant scientific discipline (e.g., chemistry, physics). Candidates with exceptional experience and technical qualifications may be considered.
  • Experience in the design, construction, and repair of electronic instrumentation.
  • Experience using CAD tools for tasks such as circuit simulation, design of programmable logic, schematic capture, and circuit board layout.

    DESIRED
  • Advanced degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Experience working in an academic research environment, ideally in the area of technical services.
  • Ability to perform tasks independently with precision, accuracy, and meticulous attention to detail in an intense work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills to work with diverse groups.
  • Ability to react to changing needs and take the initiative to make suggestions, use available resources, and find solutions to answer questions, solve problems, and help best meet the Department’s goals.
  • Ability and drive to provide excellent customer service and to interact successfully with students, faculty, and staff, including non-native English speakers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills to independently manage work priorities across multiple complex projects and meet stringent timelines with minimal supervision.

    Conditions of Employment
    Occasional work outside of typical business hours may be required to meet specific deadlines or subject to special events taking place outside of normal working hours.
