The Allen School occupies two spectacular buildings — the Paul G. Allen Center and the adjacent Bill & Melinda Gates Center — located at the heart of the UW campus in Seattle. The Allen School has an outstanding opportunity for a Robotics Lab Manager. Robotics researchers at the Allen School are engaged in ground-breaking work in mechanism design, sensors, computer vision, robot learning, Bayesian state estimation, control theory, numerical optimization, biomechanics, neural control of movement, computational neuroscience, brain-machine interfaces, natural language instruction, physics-based animation, mobile manipulation, and human-robot interaction. We are currently working to define large-scale joint initiatives that will enable us to leverage our multi-disciplinary expertise to attack the most challenging problems in field. The Allen School’s robotics capacity greatly increased in 2018, when a new 3,000-square-foot robotics laboratory opened in the Bill & Melinda Gates Center, bringing total robotics shared space to over 4,000 square feet. In this newly created position, the Robotics Lab Manager will provide cohesive lab management services for this shared space - collectively referred to as the Robotics Lab. The lab is used by multiple distinct research groups comprised of faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and staff. Initially, this position will primarily focus on these four groups: the Human-Centered Robotics lab, the Personal Robotics Lab, the Robot Learning Lab, and the Robotics and State-Estimation Lab. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Robotics Lab Manager (Program Operations Specialist) will utilize independent judgment and decision making to supervise day-to-day activities of lab operations, ensure safety, create policies, and manage assets for the robotics lab and off campus locations, all within the framework of ensuring that the lab mission tracks to the overall vision of the Allen School. The Robotics Lab Manager will report to the Allen School Director of Facilities, and will work closely with faculty leaders of specific lab groups. Responsibilities will include the following: Training and Safety Programs •Train all associated researchers including graduate and undergraduate students, staff, and faculty for lab safety including but not limited to COVID safety, general lab procedures and policies, and handling of robotics hardware. •Accountable for continuous review of safety processes and documentation, in accordance with UW and Allen School policies, collaborating with all Robotics faculty and key staff. Create and develop plans for lab safety. Ensure safety signage is current and displayed. •As the program grows, it is possible that future duties could include supporting workshop instructional needs, such as assisting with K-12 summer camps. Asset Management •Ensure maintenance, repairs and support of all lab equipment, including equipment located in the lab and in off-site facilities. •Work directly with grant managers to procure research equipment (faculty-specific) and shared resource tool program. Create, organize and manage tool check-out system. •Manage and coordinate all robot shipments and storage spaces. Assist Allen School Facilities Director in negotiating space storage contracts. Serve as Allen School coordinator/liaison for off-site spaces. •Provide annual Robotics asset inventory report for Allen School Asset Manager. Space Management •Manage all assigned Robotics spaces with regard to the following: - Manage space layout- desk configuration, robot floor plans. - Ensure lab setup for instruction of quarterly capstone courses, in coordination with Computer Science Lab Support and Facilities teams. - Conduct periodic space audits to assure safety compliance. - Manage and respond to requests for additional furniture/storage furniture to support all Robotics programs. •Create annual space assessment needs for all Robotics faculty, make space requests of Allen School management teams accordingly. Other Duties •Organize weekly internal Robotics Town Hall meetings to discuss any issues related to shared spaces, shared tools, etc. with researchers from the user groups. Lead the meeting, triage issues and coordinate as needed with other Allen School groups to respond and reach outcomes. •Setup external speakers for weekly robotics colloquia. Coordinate selection and invitation of visitors. •Plan and organize robotic demonstrations for Allen School events and external events. •Coordinate lab visits for-campus visitors and external partners. Conduct tours that showcase the Robotics program and Allen School. Manage visit logistics including scheduling, staffing, safety. •Coordinate new student and researcher arrivals and departures, ensure user eligibility, allocate and prepare space. REQUIREMENTS: •Bachelor's degree in Business, Arts & Sciences, Engineering or related field, AND at least two years of related experience. •Experience developing procedures, supporting facilities operations and safety, managing assets, and working with students in an educational environment. •Strong technical skills; familiar with setup and maintenance of mechanical systems; ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical systems, computer, and instrumentation problems; and familiarity with related software. Familiar with electro-mechanical devices, ability to diagnose and trouble shoot mechanical systems, computer and instrumentation issues. Familiarity with related software. •Demonstrated effective interpersonal communication skills in a professional environment, including written and verbal communication, customer service, vendor relationship management, team dynamic expertise, and leadership. Ability to work with a diverse constituency, and build and maintain positive working relationships. •Ability to research and implement best practices and methods in academic research lab communities. •Proficiency with use of computers including applications such as MS Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, AcrobatPro), Google Apps, and electronic mail including Google Mail. •Basic math proficiency. •Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED EXPERIENCE •Familiarity with robotic hardware. OTHER REQUIREMENTS •Must be physically capable of lifting and moving up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. •Must be able to bend, stoop, and navigate throughout the Lab, Allen School buildings, and to other locations both on-campus and off-campus (e.g. storage locations). •Must be able to work during regularly scheduled daytime hours, such as 8am to 5pm or as arranged, and must have the flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed for special events. •As of the job creation date, this position is considered Critical under the UW’s COVID-19 Safe Start plan, described here: https://www.washington.edu/coronavirus/status/.
