The UW Finance Enterprise Services team is comprised of several units that provide core financial services for the University of Washington: Procurement Services, Records Management, Office of Public Records, DATAGroup, Creative Communications, Integrated Service Center, and the Tax Office. The Tax Office provides core services to both internal UW Finance units, and business units across the UW campuses. Tax Management has an outstanding opportunity for a Tax Manager. The Tax Manager is responsible for assuring data submitted in tax documents comply with all university, state and federal requirements. They communicate verbally and in writing the University's tax requirements including preparation and delivery of instructional materials and act as tax subject matter expert in response to customer inquiries. The position is responsible for UW tax filings including the 990 T with foreign disclosures and K-1 tax reporting. Collaboration with other departments, including identifying and resolving University tax compliance obligations and many tax reporting functions. Duties & Responsibilities: Tax Operations and Leadership • Operational leader for the tax function, ensuring that university-wide tax practices are in compliance with federal, state and local tax laws as well as other regulatory requirements. • Manage the preparation, review and filing of various tax returns. • Collects and organizes data from stakeholders to prepare tax returns. Consults with UW tax business consultants. Reviews data for accuracy. • Responsible for the compliant completion of the 990-T Exempt Organizations Business Income Tax Return, in addition to Forms 720,1099,1042-S, State Excise Tax Returns and the City of Seattle Parking and Admissions Tax Returns. Tax Leadership and Consultation • Provides UBIT, indirect, state, and international tax subject matter expertise to various UW business units. • Conducts planning, analysis and continuous communication regarding UBIT, UBIT estimates, and UBIT sources. • Supports Accounts Payable processes, serving as both tax subject matter expert and operational leader. • Works closely with Procurement Services and other Finance units on systems modernizations, changes, and other technological issues. • Performs assigned tax planning functions related to all aspects of UW’s business. • Actively identifies and supports tax technology and process improvement initiatives. • Advises individuals at all levels of the organization regarding tax issues and appropriate courses of action. • Provides UBIT, indirect, state, and international tax subject matter expertise to various business units. • Conducts planning, analysis and continuous communication regarding UBIT, UBIT estimates, and UBIT sources. • Identifies training needs for tax related issues such as sales tax, UBIT and independent contractors. Design and prepare instructional materials and deliver on-line and in-person training. Tax Research • Research and analyze tax matters domestically and in international jurisdictions. • Monitor and research new tax/regulatory laws and regulations as they arise and work to find solutions. Required Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in Taxation, Accounting or related field of study; • Minimum six years of progressive experience preparing tax returns • Excellent communication skills; • Experience researching and interpreting complex laws and regulations for business applications • Self-starter, demonstrated initiative to ensure stakeholder satisfaction; • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy of work; • Proficiency/expert level skills in MS Office including Excel, Word and PowerPoint Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration. Desired Qualifications: • C.P.A. • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Washington state excise tax issues • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Federal tax exempt organization tax matters • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Schedule K-1 reporting (UBTI, FTC, 926, 8865, 5471, etc.) • Experience with Convey and/or Glacier Tax Compliance Software.
