Our next Vice President of Finance & Administration

While technical skills are paramount to success in the role, other attributes will also determine success as part of the BLSA team. We are a small organization with big ambitions. This is not a role for a functionary seeking to live inside spreadsheets and schedules; rather, this opportunity is ideal for someone who embraces the mission of urban public education and the potential it holds for bettering society. Good humor, personal flexibility, and fluency in communication will complement a detail orientation and deep knowledge of financial matters in non-profit organizations.

Job Responsibilities:

Financial Planning and Budgeting

• Develop and administer the BLSA budget, multiyear forecasts, financial strategic planning, and program assessment to maximize the most efficient and effective use of resources.

• Provide leadership and administrative support to the Audit, Finance and Investment Committees in building both managerial and governance oversight of the BLSA’s finances and investments.

• Monitor financial performance by measuring and analyzing results.

Accounting and Financial Reporting

• Maintain all day-to-day accounting activities, and maintain and analyze general ledger accounts, including preparation and review of monthly reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts.

• Prepare and present high-level presentations to the Board of Trustees regarding BLSA’s financial status in a clear, concise manner that is appropriate for both those with financial backgrounds and those without.

• Coordinate annual independent audit as well as reporting to the Audit Committee, responding to and/or implementing the auditor’s administrative recommendations.

• Prepare or oversee the preparation of all income, payroll, and exempt organizational tax returns, reports, and statements.

Financial Systems and Internal Controls

• Establish and maintain effective procedures and controls for the organization’s financial systems that support reporting in accordance with relevant standards including FASB, IRS, and AICPA.

• Develop and maintain a procedures and controls manual.

Fund Administration

• Coordinate and monitor funded programs at the Boston Latin School to ensure tracking the status of each program through its program life cycle; monitor expenses for allowable uses of funds.

Other Administrative

• Supervise accounting staff.

• Establish and maintain relationships with financial institutions and other service providers.

• Oversee the human resource function including the administration of payroll, insurance and benefit plans.

• Update job knowledge by remaining aware of new regulations, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.

• Represent the BLSA with the highest level of professionalism and integrity embracing the BLSA’s core values in all interactions with leadership, trustees, members of the faculty and staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends.

• Assume other duties as may be assigned by the President.
