This position is in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology.  This position is for the Medical School Campus.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We investigate the role of DNA damage and repair during normal and malignant hematopoiesis, using the in vitro targeted differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells as a model.  This position assists in developing and conducting research projects, including experimental design, data analysis and documentation of experimental results.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Following instructions and discussions with principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification and management of data.
2. Conducts and assists in experiments involving the development of blood from human stem cells harboring different mutations in DNA repair genes.
3. Maintains cell cultures and differentiates stem cells into hematopoietic lineages.
4. Performs flow cytometry and sorting analysis.
5. Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
6. Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports.  Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
7. Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers.
8. Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects.  Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
9. Conducts literature searches related to research project.

Master’s degree with four years of experience in research lab operations or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling nine years.

• Extensive experience with cell culture, preferentially human pluripotent stem cells.
• Motivation for learning new techniques.
• Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
• Experience with molecular biology techniques (DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, RT-PCR and Western blot).
• Troubleshooting skills, independent analytical thinking, and research planning skills.
• Ability to analyze and interpret data and to communicate data in a clear, concise manner. 
• Computer literacy including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data.

The hiring range for this position is $46,779 - $63,170 annually.

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.  The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment.
