Position Announcement:

The IU Southeast Library invites applications for the Director of Library Services. The IU Southeast Library plays a vital role fostering student success via excellent reference services, an outstanding information literacy program, effective and engaging patron outreach and service, and responsive, pedagogically relevant collections and services.

We seek a creative, enthusiastic, motivated, innovative, collaborative leader to guide a collegial team of five faculty librarians and seven staff members who are strongly committed to delivering state-of-the-art services and resources in a supportive, service-oriented, collaborative environment.

This is a tenure-track position with expectations for excellent performance, research/creative activity/professional development, and service. The successful candidate will be hired at the Associate Librarian rank.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of library administration, operations, and finance
  • Manage a complex budget that includes funds for library operations, library collections, and foundation accounts
  • Assure inclusive hiring and personnel procedures are in place to assure diversity in the hiring of faculty, staff, and student workers, and to create a safe and welcoming environment for all library users
  • Lead library strategic planning in the context of campus and university strategic plans; facilitate progress toward strategic goals
  • Facilitate planning and resources related to physical and digital archival programs, especially with relationship to campus history resources and distinctive collections
  • Facilitate planning for library technology needs, and work with University Information Technology Services to identify and implement new library technologies
  • Facilitate activities, events, marketing, social media strategies to build awareness of and usage of library resources, collections and spaces
  • With library faculty and staff, develop assessment plans for programs, services and collections
  • Ensure that library resources reflect the pedagogical, curricular, and research needs of the campus community (including, where possible, community users)
  • Facilitate the development and improvement of library services and procedures
  • Collaborate with faculty to assure that library collections and services support teaching and learning and faculty and student success
  • Seek external funding in the form of grants and gifts to support library initiatives
  • Represent the library on academic, administrative and professional committees and councils at campus, university, state, national and international levels, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with relevant campus partners, including, but not limited to, University Information Technology Services, Writing Center, Student Affairs, offices related to diversity and equity, services for students with disabilities, and all student support offices, including Athletics, Advising, Financial Aid, Testing, Institutional Effectiveness, to assure that spaces and services are deployed to support student learning
  • Maintain a mechanism for collecting and responding to suggestions and feedback

    Basic Qualifications:

    Required qualifications

  • A master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Experience in leading, motivating, and mentoring others in a library setting
  • Experience with or participation in budgeting, strategic planning, or other aspects of library administration
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Commitment to professional development appropriate for promotion and tenure
  • Experience with and commitment to cultivating an inclusive environment for all library workers and library patrons, with particular focus on diversity, equity, anti-racism, and social justice
  • Proficiency with technology as it relates to information services
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based, collaborative environment

    Additional Qualifications:

    Preferred qualifications

  • Supervisory or administrative experience in an academic library
  • Experience in spearheading and implementing library assessment plans and/or strategic plans
  • Experience in leading the planning and implementation of an initiative or update in critical library resources and services, such as space updates or renovation, technology updates or enhancements, and/or other initiatives
  • Experience with seeking external funding from grants and/or donor gifts

    Relevant pre-professional experience, as well as relevant experience in other library settings (e.g., school, public, special, etc.), will be considered. Relevant transferrable skills or experience from other professional non-library settings will also be considered.
