Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Facilities Division is offering an exciting opportunity to work with world leaders in science, and be a part of a team that will advance science and influence the world. The Mechanical Design Engineer will ensure mechanical engineering support across the campus and will possess technical engineering expertise, problem solving abilities, and strong mechanical system design capabilities.

In this role you will plan and conduct independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of standard mechanical engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria for obtaining results. You will need to apply new and appropriate design approaches to solve the mechanical problems encountered.

The role will also include providing design reviews of LBNL Projects for compliance with mechanical codes and standards as well as for constructability, operability, maintainability, reliability, and life cycle cost of the equipment.

You will represent the Facilities Division as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for mechanical equipment and technical matters for which the Division has oversight and will ensure uniformity of compliance with Facilities Division policies, procedures and standards.

Berkeley Lab is located above UC Berkeley, on 202 acres that house over two million square feet of state-of-the-art scientific centers and support facilities. Responsibilities:

• Assume responsibility for mechanical engineering design activities and deliverables. Coordinate closely with Facilities Operations and Facilities Maintenance & Utilities departments to identify priorities and maintain schedules. Determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate the activities of other personnel.

• Design new systems and system modifications that maintain or increase overall system reliability.

• Ensure system modifications comply with laboratory standards/specifications, code requirements, operability, constructability and project requirements.

• Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of mechanical discipline LBNL Master Specifications and Standard Details.

• Represent the Facilities Engineering Department and LBNL as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for mechanical engineering and HVAC systems.

• Assume responsibility as mechanical engineering SME on design teams and design review teams during the preparation of construction documents. May function as team lead and point of contact for engineering deliverables.

• Responsible for preparing original engineering design drawings and calculations.

• Responsible for reviewing engineering calculations and construction drawings prepared by subcontractor engineers. May be responsible for managing the work scope, schedule and budget of subcontractor engineers.

• Coordinate with or manage subcontractor design engineers/architects for developing construction documents.

• Support Design Managers and Project Managers to provide mechanical system designs that are cost effective while meeting performance targets for safety, resilience and reliability.

Minimum Qualifications:

• 4-year degree from an accredited institution in mechanical engineering or related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience; or 3 years of relevant experience and a Master's degree.

• Expert verbal and written communication, facilitation and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain and advise line management and science program customers.

• Demonstrated experience in the design of HVAC systems for office buildings, data centers and research laboratories.

• Demonstrated experience in applicable codes, regulations and standards such as the California Building Standards Code (Part 4 - Mechanical Code, Part 5 - Plumbing Code, Part6 - Energy Code, Part 11 Green Building Standards).

• Knowledgeable of current mechanical and fire safety codes; industry standards; DOE Orders; EH&S Pub-3000; and other safety-related procedures.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

• Over 8 years of experience with a Bachelor's Degree or 6 years experience with a Master's Degree.

• Advanced knowledge of design, construction, and operation of office & laboratory facilities.

• Advanced operational knowledge of chilled water plants, heating hot water boilers, compressed air (CA) plants and CA distribution systems.

• Advanced knowledge of applicable DOE Orders and Federal Standards.

• This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
