MDT-Addiction Program Manager: Department of Neuroscience

Job Summary: The primary purpose of the MDTA Program Manager position is to coordinate/carry out the day-to-day research support functions of the MDTA initiative per the direction of the Director establish relationships with key staff in relevant University units, and facilitate communication about the program activities to stakeholders. This position requires a deep understanding of the research process and the ability to collect, maintain, analyze and report on data from across the U. The reporting function takes a variety of formats from more public documents to private correspondence. The position formally reports to the Director of the MDTA, Dr. Mark Thomas although operates independently with minimal supervision.
Carry out the operational and strategic initiatives of the MDTA, as directed by the director of the MDTA. Ensure implementation and completion of all MDTA activities, including supporting research grant activities with relevance to the MDTA. Serve as a resource to external and internal stakeholders of the initiative to include basic science and clinical departments within the University of Minnesota Medical School, the Central Budget Office. Serve as a liaison to program committees (e.g., Executive Committee, Faculty Search Committee). Ensure that program activities fulfill the Medical Discovery Teams criteria developed by the Legislature. The MDTA Program Manager will work closely with the Director and faculty leaders on the MDTA Executive Committee to facilitate and implement new research initiatives and will have broad oversight of the entire project. The candidate will carry out the operational and strategic initiatives as directed by MDTA director. Ensure implementation and completion of all MDTA activities. Tasks include developing work plans and coordinating or delegating effort associated with the key elements of the MDTA. Candidate will work in collaboration with the Chair and other members of the Executive Committee, Faculty Search Committee and other committees, as assigned to implement program activities. They are expected to regularly evaluate, or facilitate the evaluation of, program activities for improvement. Help set the agenda of meetings based on initiative priorities. Manage or facilitate planning and implementation for a number activities and projects including: seminars, annual retreats for the MDT on Addiction along with the recruitment plans for faculty and infrastructure staff searches. Candidate is also responsible for managing faculty grants programs and pilot grants by planning for submission and renewals. The candidate will support MDT on Addiction initiatives through outreach activities or other partnerships that extend the reach of influence or benefits of current initiatives. The candidate will also manage all internal and external communications for MDT on Addiction – including correspondence, meetings minutes, announcements for events, etc. They will share information on the initiatives through social media and include language about how specific outreach supports research initiatives , create the design and content for an MDTA newsletter, website and social media accounts, meet with program staff from the other Medical Discovery Team in an effort to share and learn about the research activities. These relationships are essential and bring value to the MDTA in the form of a deeper understanding of the overall initiative and opportunities for improvement in programming and operations. Candidate is expected to continuously look for opportunities to connect the MDTA to individuals/groups that may benefit from its programmatic goals, and take the initiative to reach out to them. Candidate is also expected to attend seminars given by scientists and clinicians that have been invited by the Medical Discovery Teams to further engage with the science and service as a resource for the Medical Discovery Team on Addiction.
Prepare all necessary correspondence and reporting of activities, progress and metrics for the Medical School Dean’s office. These reports contain data on program activities and their outputs, outcomes and impacts that are the result of those program activities. The reports include faculty publications, grant submissions, awards, outreach activities, clinical trials, hiring activity, etc. Candidate will be responsible for creating methods for gathering and curating the data, and translating them to the reporting tools provided by the Dean’s office. Candidate will also draft the initial annual report and revise in collaboration with the Director of the MDTA. In collaboration with the finance team, provide financial oversight for the program. Translate the proposed activities into budget items for the funding request. Candidate will work closely with the Director for the MDTA to devise a 4-year budget that will represent the program priorities and fit within established budget limits. Monitor and forecast the budget, report on its status, and take corrective action as required. Candidate is responsible for formulating processes for monitoring, forecasting and communicating the budget status that are transparent and effective for stakeholders (including MDTA Executive Committee, finance staff across the Medical School who oversee MDTA transactions). Candidate will also work closely with department finance staff to develop and improve the budget monitoring processes and reporting tools. They are expected to be knowledgeable about allowable program expenses in order to advise staff and faculty regarding program expenditures.

Required Qualifications: BS degree in Neuroscience or related degree with at least 6 years of experience or an advanced degree with 4 years of related work experience.
