Senior Accountant

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for complex accounting activities including endowment, temporarily restricted funds, and financial aid award accounting. They participate in producing financial statements and in the annual fiscal and single audits. These activities require the support of a collaborative, creative individual who enjoys working with business partners to solve new financial challenges. This position is subject to a successful completion of a background check.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITES:

Financial Processes, Development and Communication - 20%
  • Responsible for maintaining and upholding existing financial processes, policies and procedures with specific emphasis on gifts with donor restrictions, government grants, and financial aid awards.
  • Coordinate with Business Service Office managers to identify opportunities to improve services and processes.
  • Build relationships with colleagues across multiple service lines to provide seamless integrated service.

Reconciliation and Reporting - 30%
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining various reports prepared by the Business Office.
  • Monthly reconciliation of gift revenue between Advancement and the general ledger. Calculate discount on pledges and determine
  • Reconciliation of account receivable billing activity to the general ledger, preparation of monthly accounts receivable aging and analysis. Annual bad debt reserve calculation.
  • Assist with the preparation of annual financial statement and single audit schedules.
  • Work as a team member on the monthly close process and 990 filing.


Complex Accounting Functions - 40%
  • Endowment Fund Accounting: calculate scholarship projections based on a 3-year average of endowment fund balances. Present calculations to CFO and upper management for budget purposes. Prepare and post entries to record annual endowment spending distribution.
  • Gift and grant fund accounting: be the financial lead on grant fund accounting. Coordinate with Operations, Programs and Advancement to ensure ongoing and future grant accounting requirements are being met.
  • Investment Accounting: produce investment cash flow statement, revenue reconciliation and fair value schedule.

Other duties and accounting work as assigned - 10%

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree and at least five years experience in accounting required.
  • Prior experience with fund accounting in a higher education or other not-for-profit institution strongly preferred.
  • Experience with ERP systems and Microsoft Office suite; prior experience with Workday highly desired.
  • Highly competent self-directed individual with the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm about work; takes initiative to get things done.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with internal business partners. Assess and challenge existing practices; recommend and implement process improvements.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong organizational and time management skills
  • Results-oriented/delivery focused; ability to deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines
