Position Summary: The Director of Athletics reports to the Vice President for Campus Life and is responsible for the leadership and management of the Department of Athletics, ensuring its general welfare, effectiveness, efficiency, and favorable reputation, including success in athletic competition and development of Christ-like student-athletes. The Director ensures that the Department of Athletics operates in a manner consistent with: *The FPU mission, vision, values, policies, plans, and budgets *The Strategic Plan of the Department of Athletics as approved by the President and the Board of Trustees *The NCAA Division II philosophy, policies, and regulations for intercollegiate athletic competition *A departmental and university culture that values and consistently models good sportsmanship, academic achievement, athletic achievement, spiritual vitality, emotional health, and altruistic service. Essential Functions: •Uphold the “Founded on Christ” mission of Fresno Pacific University at all times •Unfaltering commitment to the “The Fresno Pacific University Idea” and agreement to support its ideals and practices while employed by the University •In all areas, while working with staff members and students, display a Christ-like disposition demonstrated by genuine servant leadership. •Provide leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the Department of Athletics. •Develop strong supportive relationships with the various internal and external FPU constituencies that meet the needs of FPU in general and FPU Athletics in particular. •Enhance a brand and image for FPU Athletics that is consistent with the brand and image of FPU, the NCAA Division II, and the Pacific West Conference. •Uphold the Christian mission and vision of the University and infuse a culture of Christ-centered values and Christ-like behavior in the department of athletics. •Provide a fully integrated holistic student-athlete experience which includes opportunities for engagement with the entire FPU campus. •Certify that revenue goals, typically realized through achieving appropriate fundraising targets, agreed upon roster sizes, and astute athletic aid distribution, are being realized within the athletics department. •In collaboration with the Vice President of Advancement and the Assistant Athletics Director for External Relations, lead and coordinate all fund development related to FPU Athletics. •Oversee and coordinate all program development related to FPU Athletics. •Ensure the successful implementation of meaningful and verifiable community service and engagement for the Department of Athletics. •Ensure attainment of Department of Athletics grade point average, graduation rate, and retention rate targets as defined in the Athletics Assessment Plan. •Operate with strict adherence to all NCAA rules and interpretations and communicate the institution’s commitment to rules compliance to faculty, staff and student-athletes. •Achieve strict adherence to the professional, performance, and behavioral expectations and requirements as outlined in the Department of Athletics handbooks. •Chair all Department of Athletics meetings and attend major events. •Develop, monitor, and operate within the Department of Athletics annual budget. •Give direction, supervision, support, and encouragement to the coaching staff and the entire FPU Athletics program. •Oversee and ensure the distribution of Department of Athletics employment agreements and contracts. •Oversee and guide the hiring process for Department of Athletics personnel. •Ensure the evaluation and professional development of all coaches and other Department of Athletics personnel, and consult with athletics administration team on evaluations as needed. •Establish and implement operational policies and procedures related to student conduct, recruitment, athletics contracts, athletic scholarships, scheduling, and the student-athlete experience. •Represent FPU at national, regional and conference meetings. •Oversee the eligibility certification process with the Registrar's Office in compliance with Conference and NCAA rules and bylaws. •Work with head coaches and Campus Life staff in support of the FPU disciplinary process as needed. •Maintain effective organizational lines of authority within the Department of Athletics with emphasis on oversight and accountability. •Arrange for periodic self-studies of the Department of Athletics. •Ensure annual monitoring and compliance of the FPU Athletics Gender Equity Plan, Athletics Diversity Plan, and Athletics Assessment Plan. •Serve as an ex officio member of the Sunbird Club board and ensure that each officer has knowledge of NCAA rules. •Review and approve game schedules with an emphasis on appropriate competitive opportunity, budget consideration and impact on the student-athlete experience including academic impact. •Evaluate potential NCAA rule violations and notify the University President of violations. •Support and ensure a comprehensive rules education program. •Generate and promote NCAA legislative proposals. •Serve as an ex-officio member of the Athletics Compliance Committee. •Serve as a member of the FPU President’s Council. •Provide regular updates to the FPU Board of Trustees and attend board meetings. •Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Campus Life.
