The Educator will be responsible for the planning, development, delivery, evaluation, coordination, and management of the Agricultural Stewardship Program in Suffolk County. This person will be responsible for administrative and programmatic staff supervision and effectively manage resources available to the program. Target communities are commercial agriculture and ornamental horticulture enterprises. The program's focus is on developing, implementing, and educating environmentally sound agriculture practices to minimize the impact of agricultural inputs on surface water and groundwater. The Educator will identify Agricultural Stewardship Program needs and set goals and priorities with program advisory committees, program participants, Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) staff, Cornell faculty, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District personnel, and other partner organizations and associations. In cooperation with CCE Resource Educators, this individual will coordinate applied research and on-farm demonstration projects and assist with ongoing projects. This individual will also develop and assist with educational and outreach materials and programs specifically oriented to Long Island agriculture.
The Educator will maintain direct linkage with Cornell and County extension staff to develop and enhance relationships with appropriate agencies, organizations, and other groups on a local, regional, and statewide basis in agricultural, environmental stewardship.

Required Qualifications:

• Master's degree in soil science, agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, or related science with an emphasis in sustainable agriculture, pest, or nutrient management.
• Relevant experience in agricultural extension, similar educational fields, or agricultural, environmental stewardship.
• Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks with minimum supervision.
• Ability to work as a team member and work with staff, cooperating agencies, and organizations.
• Willingness to learn new tasks and ability to work independently.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and budgets simultaneously.
• Proficient computer skills such as the Microsoft Office Suite and experience with statistical analysis.
• Ability to practice sound, ethical judgment when representing CCE Suffolk to ensure that all protocols and procedures adhere to legal and safety requirements.
• Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Course work in soil science, agronomy, plant pathology, entomology, weed science, pest, or nutrient management.
• Experience working with environmental stewardship related to the commercial agriculture/horticulture industry.
• Two or more years of experience in agricultural extension or similar educational fields preferred.
• Experience communicating with farmers, leading on-farm trials, and hosting field days
• Experience working with other researchers, educators, and extension staff in developing and delivering community and environmental horticulture educational programs.
• Knowledge of local County needs and the services provided by other agencies related to agricultural, environmental stewardship.
• Experience in grant writing and overseeing budgets.
• Experience with planning, teaching, and evaluating adult educational programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Program Responsibilities:

Program Assessment - 15%

• Apply subject matter knowledge to identify gaps and trends in the agricultural community regarding

• Recommend programmatic offerings, enhancements, and improvements.
• Maintain links with Cornell University, program advisory groups, other supporting organizations, associations, and program participants to identify program needs.

Program Development - 15%

• Develop educational and outreach materials specifically designed for the needs and conditions of

• Research, identify and select existing resources for the program.
• Work with multidisciplinary team efforts to develop the program to address priority issues.
• Develop well-integrated Association educational efforts.
• Develop programs to meet changing local issues.
• Make programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes.
• Assist in applying high-level disciplinary subject matter knowledge to develop educational strategies and programs to meet regional issues.
• May assist in the development of the program to meet changing multi-association issues.

Program Delivery - 20%

• Conduct educational programs through meetings, seminars, committees, and individual counseling on
• agricultural, environmental stewardship, focusing on minimizing the impact of agricultural inputs on surface and groundwater.
• Serve as subject matter expert in discipline to program committees, CCE staff, and clientele, including agencies and other groups on a local, regional, and statewide basis.
• As a team member, serve as a resource expert and support other Cornell staff in cooperative projects and programs.
• Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities as part of program delivery.
• Deliver the program utilizing a variety of educational methodologies.
• Provide educational program efforts via mass media, when appropriate.
• May be involved in multidisciplinary team efforts and multi-association team efforts to deliver the program.
• Ensure program delivery is within the scope of the statewide Plan of Work.

Program Evaluation - 10%

• Apply subject matter knowledge to evaluate the educational program.
• Design or create the program evaluation framework.
• Implement program evaluation.
• Analyze collected program evaluation data.

• Make recommendations for improvements.
• May be involved in the multidisciplinary team and multi-association team efforts to design or analyze program evaluation.
• Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University faculty and program units for program evaluation guidance.
• May have direct linkage with other universities or associations for program evaluation guidance.
• Interpret evaluation data to the constituencies.
• Communicate evaluation results and findings.
• Interact with various constituencies to obtain their evaluation of programs.

Applied Research - 10%

• Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise, utilizing appropriate policies and

• Monitor program to ensure that educational content conforms to policies and objectives of the Association and is research-knowledge based.
• Monitor income and expenses to ensure spending is within budget.
• Manage financial budgets based on program needs.
• Effectively allocate financial resources to accomplish program objectives.
• Guide the implementation of communication strategies.
• Effectively allocate human resources to accomplish program objectives.
• Supervise and guide staff activities to achieve program objectives, including performance reviews.

Coordination/Operation - 5%

• Compile existing resources into educational program materials.
• Collect evaluation data from program participants based on the existing framework.
• Collect applied research data based on the existing framework.
• Collect program needs assessment data based on the existing framework.
• Coordinate program implementation, planning, and activities efforts.
• Prepare reports on the progress and accomplishments of the Agricultural Stewardship Program.
• Communicate results, findings, and recommendations to program participants, Cornell Cooperative Extension staff, agencies, and other groups as needed.
• Prepare and submit proposals for grants or other funding, when appropriate.
• Complete required reports and financial documentation for grant or funding sources.
• Implement the established staffing plan to ensure program needs are met.

• In cooperation with Supervisor or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
