The Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU), through its programs and facilities is a focal point of the campus where students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni and guests develop an enduring connection to the university. As a campus social hub, the SMSU assists in the retention and development of students, while encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural pluralism, gender equity, and ethnic diversity. We accomplish this by providing a variety of cultural, social, educational and recreational activities, which create an environment conducive to personal growth and development. Planned activities also provide students with leadership opportunities and employment, which promotes an active learning experience as well as relaxation, entertainment, and social interaction. As the meeting place on campus for students and organizations, the facilities provide a comfortable and relaxing environment that embodies the delivery of services important to the university community. As a bridge between formal learning and life experience, co-curricular activities coordinated by the SMSU serve as a training ground for development of student leaders.
The SMSU facilities include a spacious lobby, relaxation and study lounge areas, meeting rooms, a state of the art theater, multi-purpose Events Center used for major events, an Automatic Teller Machine, graphics services, and Student Union scheduling. Our newest addition to assist our students academically is the laptop checkout program. Other services and departments located within the SMSU are the Coyote Cafe, the Blue Coyote Pub, Starbucks, Coyote Express convenience store, the Associated Students, Inc., DREAMers Resource and Success Center, Title IX & Gender Equity, Orientation and First Year Experience, and the Office of Student Engagement.

Work Schedule
This is a regular, full-time, hourly position. Willingness to work a flexible schedule as necessary in order to respond to emergency/urgent situations is required. This may include working extended hours, evenings, weekends and some holidays.
General Purpose
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU), this position contributes to campus diversity and inclusion goals by providing leadership for, and advancement of programs affecting the quality of campus life for students of color, as well as underrepresented students. This position is accountable for supporting CSUSB through diversity, equity, and inclusion goals through SMSU Center initiatives. This position plans, implements, and assesses programs and initiatives to meet the diverse needs of our students by coordinating programs developed by the Affinity Centers including the Asian Pacific Islander Resource Center, Cross Cultural Center, First Peoples' Center, Pan-African Center, Queer and Transgender Resource Center, LatinX Center, and Women's Resource Center. The Associate Director promotes persistence towards graduation through personal advisement, referrals and intervention, identity development opportunities, and community inclusion programs and outreach.
Primary Functions:
Santos Manuel Student Union
In consultation with the Executive Director, collaborate with key offices and academic departments to support the transition and successful integration of students of color, students from other underrepresented groups, and diverse populations into CSUSB.
This individual is a member of the SMSU/RecWell leadership team and in that is responsible for ensuring that the policies, procedures, and initiatives assure the well-being and development of students of color and underrepresented students of color and underrepresented students, affirm human dignity, and champion cultural pluralism across campus.
Serves in a support and leadership capacity for the coordination of multicultural and international related programming, including but not limited to Black History Month, LatinX Month, Asian Awareness Month, Women's History Month, LGBTQ+ celebrations, First People and California Native American Week, and the Pow Wow.
Assist the Executive Director in assessing the educational and supportive needs of offices and departments.
Coordinate and advance the dialogue around race, gender, and sexual orientation through campus programs, initiatives, and conversations. Develop, maintain, and assess a robust team of trained student and staff facilitators, facilitate programming in and out of the classroom, and engage in education and training.
Create, implement, and assess programs and initiatives that promote increased multicultural competence and diversity awareness within the CSUSB community

Division of Student Affairs and CSUSB
Advise underrepresented students on cultural awareness and adaptation, personal advancement and academic success through outreach and development of ongoing relationships. Assess student needs, connect them to campus support networks, and provide guidance and support.
Promote and support students' integration into the region through trips, inter- institution connections, transportation, etc.
Advance the productivity of the Affinity Centers. Hire, train, and supervise Affinity Center employees.
Serve as organizational and program advisor to students represented by the Affinity Centers. Support organizational needs and programming.
Coordinate and implement orientation programming for students to apprise them of current issues within the areas reflected by the Affinity Centers.
Ensure programs and initiatives within the area of responsibility are assessed regularly and improved with data-driven decision-making.
Assist with division-wide programs coordinated by the SMSU and the Division of Student Affairs, including an annual student leadership conference, etc.
Serve on the CSUSB Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Board as a representative for students and student programming.
Serve as a member of the Bias Response Action Committee (BRAC) within the Division of Student Affairs

Customer Service and Collaboration:
Knows the mission and goals of the Santos Manuel Student Union and commits to achieving them.
Ensures SMSU customer service guidelines are met by all staff in the department.
Ensures department guidelines are established and met by all staff in the department
Develops and maintains positive working relationships with campus partners, off-campus partners, and other university employees.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in higher education, social justice education, counseling, student affairs, or a related program is required
Experience:
3-5 years of experience working with college students required, ideally in a student development or advising capacity.
Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of student development and theory, social justice education, and the needs of diverse populations in higher education is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have strong communicationskills and the ability to read, write, and communicate at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
Ability to operate a personal computer, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and ability to learn and utilize new software programs
Ability to provide excellent customer service and work well with part-time and full-time staff
Ability to take the initiative for additional projects and be self-motivated to initiate interactions with guests
Ability to meet deadlines, work effectively in a dynamic environment, and prioritize workload
Ability to manage information flow (including internal and external communication)
Ability to initiate collaborative work with diverse students, faculty and staff.
Ability to pay attention to detail and be accurate
Ability to demonstrate thoroughness, completeness, follow through on presentation and appearance of work
Ability to stay abreast of DEI literature and disseminate pertinent information to the SMSU/RecWell team
Demonstrated experience in student program development, budget management, and contract negotiations.
Demonstrated ability to influence the creation, implementation, and management of a balanced array of programs that reflect students' interests and educational needs.
Proven ability to assess program impact on student learning, including the use of quantitative and qualitative data.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Master's degree is preferred
