Position Summary

The multidisciplinary Digital Communications team at WashU is seeking a Senior Interactive Web Designer with a passion for creative problem solving and user-centered design. This designer will work in partnership with our Digital Creative Director and team to create engaging web experiences that align with university brand guidelines and utilize the latest trends in interactive and responsive web design.

Our Digital Communications team is responsible for the digital side of marketing and communications. We design, build, and maintain the primary public-facing university websites including https://wustl.edu/, https://source.wustl.edu/, https://alumni.wustl.edu/, https://giving.wustl.edu, and https://admissions.wustl.edu/. Specializing in WordPress, we created and continue to maintain the universityâ™s self-publishing website service called WashU Sites. Additionally, we apply WashU brand standards and best practices to email, online search, and the university calendar, among others.

Over the past four years, weâ™ve been evolving our portfolio to serve our audiences in more effective and compelling ways. Our success has opened doors to new and exciting ventures across WashU. We seek to enhance our design team to meet expanded opportunities and to even more consistently deliver high-quality design.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Drives UX strategies and approaches that balance business objectives with customer needs.

Leads brainstorming sessions internally and with campus partners.
Works within multi-disciplinary teams to produce clever ways to address design challenges as well as to evaluate the feasibility of proposed solutions.
Facilitates collaboration and lead definition, direction, and execution of interactive design.

Designs user-centered, interactive, responsive web designs

Creates, presents and delivers user flows, wireframes, prototypes and design mockups for digital projects produced by University Marketing & Communications.

Creates documentation and resources (templates, UI kits, etc.) that empowers others to implement and extend design systems.

Optimizes user experiences through research, testing, and staying up to date on best practices.

Performs other tasks as requested.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate degree in Design Strategy, Human Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Communication Design, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Seven plus years of interactive web design experience.
Expert-level experience with responsive web design (RWD) and mobile-first strategies.
Experience implementing a range of user research (interviews, contextual inquiry, participatory design, usability testing, card sorting etc.).
Professional experience creating user interface specifications with appropriate design tools.
Experience and/or familiarity with Wordpress CMS block editor (Gutenburg).
Familiarity with web accessibility standards.
Demonstrable problem-solving skills.
An exceptional portfolio that showcases solid conceptual design and layout skills. The portfolio should display a solid understanding of web design best practices as well as the ability to craft unique user experiences.
Experience designing solutions that leverage emergent technologies
Comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
Experience developing prototypes, wireframes, and user flows that effectively communicate design principles and user interface interactions.
Expert level of knowledge of design tools: Adobe XD, Figma, or Sketch, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator.
High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Conversant with HTML and CSS.
Strong communication skills.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in graphic design, Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, Communication Design or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Three years of professional experience in web and/or digital design.

Salary Range

$53,900.00 - $92,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
