Job Summary

We are looking to bring on a Business and Data Analyst who will be responsible for collecting, studying, and interpreting data that will provide an in-depth understanding for management and internal business partners in USC’s Human Resources Department. This individual will collaborate with program and project leads to analyze various workforce metrics, research external benchmarking and provide tailored approaches to guiding strategic, data-informed efforts. This Analyst will understand and manage expectations for outcomes, while excelling at adhering to very short timelines and balancing priorities. This person will adapt analytical strategies based on unique project and program requirements,  and manage data visualization and reporting efforts for HR. This role will execute USC’s vision while championing USC’s culture and values.

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate for the position of Business and Data Analyst must meet the following qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

• 3 years’ experience and direct knowledge in data modeling, data warehousing and reporting.

• Detail oriented with good organizational and presentation skills.

• Creative problem solver with a strong sense of ownership.

• Highly organized, with strong attention to detail

• Exceptional quantitative & analytical abilities and proficiency in MS Excel and PowerPoint

• Excellent data visualization and reporting skills

• Extensive Project management experience for complex projects or business administration.

• Demonstrated organizational, critical thinking, interpersonal, planning, problem solving, and business analytical skills.

• Able to work at a high functional and technical level.

• Outstanding written and oral communication skills

• Team-oriented self-starter with the ability to work independently and proactively.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the position of Business and Data Analyst has the following qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in disciplines such as statistics, data science,  mathematics, accounting, business, computer science, information science or management information science, or MBA or Masters in Data Science and/or Analytics.

• 5 years’ experience and direct knowledge in data modeling, data warehousing and reporting.

• Expert knowledge of Data Warehousing methods (e.g., Kimball) and Relational and Analytical data structures (RDBMS, OLAP etc.).

• Impressive experience in designing managerial level dashboards, reports and presentations

• Ability to gather information and documents in order to analyze information strategically, creating data analyses and reports, identify patterns, and translate meaning.

• Outstanding skills in finding resolution to complicated problems while performing independently in a multifaceted environment.

• Experience with Excel, Smartsheet, PowerPivot, Tableau, Microsoft BI, and Alteryx.

• Knowledge of continuous improvement processes or change management practices.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and relationship-building abilities.

• Ability to use sound judgment in making decisions with minimal supervision.

Job Responsibilities

The candidate for the position of Business and Data Analyst will be responsible for:

• Performs data analyses and assists in interpretation of results using a variety of techniques to support business practices. Works with management to obtain and identify analytical requirements. Researches best practices and develops benchmarks. Produces data collection methods (e.g., surveys, tests, etc.), and develops tools and processes such as complex, high quality data models to support analyses. Analyzes results, reviews data for anomalies, investigates to identify and determine cause, and corrects data inaccuracies and inconsistencies as necessary. Provides recommendations and conclusions gained from analyzing data.

• Has responsibility for business-to-systems analysis such as performing ad hoc analyses and data extraction requests, and problem-solving analysis of complex management reporting and business issues. Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases/data systems. Utilizes statistical and quality management principles to report and initiate operational/business practices changes.

• Generates dashboards and reports which represent operational data in brief and intelligible format, suitable for the target audience, such as executive leadership, department managers and supervisors and other analysts.

• Provides business data trend information to support recommendations for action. Collaborates with management on matters of best practices, appropriate statistical measures and benchmarking. Provides management with suggestions, as appropriate.

• Carries out quality assessment of data, data reports and the accompanying decisions. Ensure data governance and data accuracy by inspecting, cleansing and performing quality checks.

• Conducts analysis of findings and offers action-driven recommendations and insights to executive leaders and managers on the basis of results.

• Provides recommendations for decisions affecting business operations and strategic initiatives.

• Provides guidance and assistance to business analysts, as needed. Reviews work of other analysts. Provides guidance and direction to staff and/or student workers related to business data analyses duties, as needed.

• Performs trend and benchmarking analyses. Conveys such information to executive leaders.

• Identifying and coordinating cross-functional areas of strategic projects and initiatives. Analyzing roadmaps for possible challenges and creating mitigation paths. Understanding and managing expectations for outcomes, while adhering to and adjusting timelines and balancing priorities. Tracking progress of all initiatives and reporting on progress of an overall strategic roadmap and program plan.

• Maintains currency with industry data analyses techniques, standards and related technologies.
