At Stony Brook Medicine, our Patient Access Services team is responsible for completing varied, diverse and specialized duties to support the Revenue Cycle, Compliance and Patient Experience by accurately and efficiently completing tasks in areas of Registration, Financial Screening and Verification, and patient throughput.

The Patient Access Supervisor is responsible for ED Registration Patient Traffic Control. Facilitates data integrity by supporting the work flow of staff to courteously and professionally obtain accurate and complete demographic and financial information in person or remotely following appropriate established processes, to secure consents and regulatory signatures from patients or designee, essential for treatment and payment. Provides superior quality, competitive value, and outstanding service by managing patient expectations. The supervisor adheres to strict rules of confidentiality, department, and organizational policies and procedures.
Duties of a Patient Access Supervisor may include the following but are not limited to:
Serves as the go-to Patient Access Services contact person in the Emergency Department for the multi-disciplinary staff within the ED.
Works to expedite registration functions according to priorities (i.e. by shortest anticipated LOS, etc.).
Fulfills a supervisory role to monitor and coordinate staff work efforts to appropriately deploy staff to meet facility needs and to ensure patient registrations are completed prior to discharge.
Monitor patient throughput and adjust registrar workflow, provides "on the job training" as appropriate.
Prioritizes registration and facilitates work flow to be completed by staff based on patient treatment location, LOS, and acuity levels.
Monitors staff productivity and provide constructive feedback to staff with management guidance to support throughput, compliance and financial objectives including: Accuracy, Eligibility, and Point of Service Collections.
Monitors registration and financial screening time, eligibility verification, co-pay collection, and staff efficiency by conducting hourly rounding in the department.
Ongoing quality assurance and audit of employee registrations to determine training needs. Address errors and provide educational support in real time as appropriate. Evaluate disputed errors within required timeframe.
Responsible for maintaining and collecting statistical data for audit, reports, special projects or assignments as requested.
Manages adequate staffing assignments to ED treatment areas on a rotational basis to complete patient registrations in real time. Monitors the completeness, accuracy of registration, financial verification etc. for each ED encounter.
Re-assigns staff and assignments in response to census needs and changing priorities, pulls in registrar lead support as warranted; supports management by ensuring productivity and that staff are most properly and equitably assigned work.
Evaluation of registration staff.
Appropriately relays issues identified as needing higher level intervention to supervisory attention.
Work in collaboration with other supervisors in shift endorsements, leadership shift coverage, staff schedules, time off approvals.
The selected candidate will be required to work weekends and holidays. Pass days for this position will fall on weekdays.
Essential Position: This function/position has been designated as "essential." This means that when the Hospital is faced with an institutional emergency (staff shortages, increased census, inclement weather, and/or other emergencies), employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook University Hospital and related facilities.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Associate's degree and at least two years working experience in healthcare or related industry with demonstrated experience in billing, collections/customer service.
In lieu of degree, at least five years of demonstrated excellence working in public health or revenue cycle with demonstrated experience in payment collection, insurance reimbursement, and/or patient access services.
Demonstrated moderate to high (not only basic familiarity) competence in Microsoft Office.
Candidate must exhibit leadership qualities demonstrated by excellence in verbal and written communication, computing and multi-tasking skills.
Candidate must demonstrate experience and expertise in speaking with customers and can work well with persons who are under stress (such as sick patients and their distressed family members).
Familiarity with medical insurance benefits, demonstrated experience in EMR computerized registration / financial / IT systems.
Supervisory experience in hospital patient access or patient throughput highly preferred.
