Department of Medicine: General Internal Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator. The University of Washington's Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) is considered to be among the top five Divisions of General Internal Medicine in the nation. General Internal Medicine, established in 1985, has rapidly grown to be the largest Division in the UW Department of Medicine. The Division has a workforce of approximately 500, including nearly 400 faculty members who are known for their outstanding research, teaching and patient care. The Division conducts its activities at the UW Medical Center (UWMC), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS), with research sites located at multiple sites across Seattle. The Cardiovascular Health Research Unit (CHRU) is an epidemiologic research center, whose investigators collaborate locally, nationally, and internationally to advance a better understanding of cardiovascular health. The unit is comprised of 3 Co-Directors, 9 investigators (from General Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Epidemiology and Biostatistics) and 23 research staff. The mission of the CHRU is to further the development and application of knowledge related to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The Unit currently manages approximately 40 research awards, the majority from the NIH.The CHRU within the Division of General Internal Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, 100% FTE Research Coordinator. The Research Coordinator will work among a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and research staff, managing projects for a variety of studies within the CHRU The Research Coordinator supports 2 key aspects of the research program at the CHRU: (1) coordinate day-to-day research activities of several CHRU studies; and (2) manage the off-site CHRU biorepository. (1) The individual hired for this position will participate as a key member of an epidemiologic research team and will work with investigators to meet study deadlines and objectives. In consultation with Principal Investigators, the Research Coordinator will manage and establish program goals and timetables; implement research protocols and monitor participant compliance, act to correct problems, verify accuracy of research data; write and monitor human subjects applications, modifications and renewals; and facilitate communication and cooperation between community collaborators. Tasks will also include coordinating data collection, working with the data manager to reconcile data among multiple data sources. (2) The Research Coordinator will coordinate the collection and supervise the handling of blood specimens and act as a liaison with collaborating institutions such as Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Harborview Medical Center to ensure correct procedures are followed. The Research Coordinator will also coordinate and monitor the off-site storage of biospecimens in accordance with study guidelines, as well as liaison between multiple Emergency Medical Service agencies, their research groups, multiple laboratories, other UW research groups, and community vendors. The Research Coordinator will also pull specimens to ship to other facilities and inventory the specimens as needed. RESPONSIBILITIES: Under minimal supervision, the Research Coordinator will be responsible for the following duties: Project Management – 60% FTE • In consultation with investigators, agencies, and other staff, participate in and assist with the formulation of research procedures; attend, document, and participate in scientific meetings. • Coordinate the operations of pilot research projects for future full-scale research projects. • Ensure that established guidelines for identifying research subjects and recruitment of participants are met. Develop and maintain procedure and training manuals, as well as implementing procedures to protect subjects’ personal health information and their confidentiality. • Use Emergency Medical Services and King County Vital Statistics data to develop data sets for the information base of a large cardiac arrest bio-repository. • Update study methods, forms, and procedures to ensure the continued accurate abstraction of medical charts. Work with data managers and IT team to ensure data quality, timely de-identification, and accurate and current blood inventory. • Liaison with Seattle and King County paramedics, their administrators, and research groups. Coordinate blood draw supplies and work to resolve problems. Measure, analyze, and report participation levels. Plan and schedule paramedic training activities. Liaison, as well, with other study related vendors. • Manage payment of master accounts as well as smaller vendor invoices ensuring compliance with University policies and procedures. • Work with colleagues internationally for supervision of studies set in lower-and-middle income countries Biospecimen Management – 40% FTE • Coordinate maintenance of sub-zero freezers and the storage and inventory of blood specimens in the freezers to ensure the integrity of this resource. Coordinate pulling specimens from the freezers, prep work, and shipping to labs which will conduct study-related assays with data managers, IT team, and various lab groups. Inventory the specimens obtained from subjects. Exercise budget authority for purchase of blood draw, storage, and study-related office supplies. The Research Coordinator will also coordinate and monitor the off-site storage of biospecimens in accordance with study guidelines, including managing freezer upkeep and emergencies to ensure sample integrity MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: BA in Public Health, Biological Sciences, Social Sciences and/or related field plus a minimum of 3 years related experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: •Background in epidemiological or health sciences research. •Experience with Microsoft Office software; Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint. •Ability to effectively interact with staff, investigators, collaborators, and study subjects. •Excellent written and oral communication skills DESIRED: •Work experience in related field is desirable. •Knowledge of cardiovascular disease, specifically sudden cardiac arrest. •Experience with Emergency Medical Systems records. •Experience with biorepositories Application Process: The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
