DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW Established in 2014, the Genomics Institute (GI) comprises diverse researchers from a variety of disciplines across academic divisions who are exploring the power of genomics for the benefit of both the individual and the planet. The GI is unlocking the world's genomic data to accelerate breakthroughs in health and evolutionary biology. Its platforms, technologies, and scientists unite global communities to create and deploy data-driven, life-saving treatments and innovative environmental and conservation efforts, while addressing the most fundamental societal and policy questions. The GI operating budget is approximately $32M per year made up of almost 30M in sponsored funds from federal, state and private sponsors and the remainder in gifts and institutional funding. More information about the Genomics Institute can be found at: https://ucscgenomics.soe.ucsc.edu More information about Baskin Engineering can be found at https://engineering.ucsc.edu/ JOB SUMMARY Under general direction from the Executive Director, the Director of Research Development (DRD) supports the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute (GI), a ~$30M interdisciplinary Organizational Research Unit (ORU) within Baskin Engineering at UC Santa Cruz. The Genomics Institute DRD leads the Research Development (RD) unit within the GI, a specialized team of research administrators responsible for contract and grant proposals, program development, and post award management for GI principal investigators. Primarily through subordinate grants management specialists, the DRD supports investigators to develop strategies for research program proposals, liaisons with funding agencies and Office of Sponsored Projects to coordinate competitive proposals, and works closely with Principal Investigators (PIs) and project leads in the effective management of awarded projects. The RD team drafts components of proposals, budget justifications, progress reports, and communications to agencies; works with technical staff and project managers to develop accurate budgets; works with PIs, agencies and divisional leaders to identify and implement solutions to award challenges and complications. The DRD is an experienced leader with significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals, receiving assignments in the form of objectives and determining how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs, workload, and time, and can result in lost research opportunities and delay progress on projects. This position is a key part of an active administrative office supporting the scientific efforts of faculty of the UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Genomics Institute and its related projects and organizations, such as the UCSC Genome Browser, the Computational Genomics Laboratory and Platform, the Human Cell Atlas, the Braingeneers, and the Treehouse Childhood Cancer Initiative. It also supports the operations of the Genomics Institute, which involves approximately 30-affiliated faculty, over 100 staff and researchers, as well as postdoctoral scholars and students participating in research projects supported on sponsored funds from the federal and state governments, private gifts, Foundations and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).
