POSITION DETAILS

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY. In 2019, LaGuardia served over 30,000 students in pre-college, associate degree, and continuing education programs. Major areas of study include Health Sciences, STEM, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts. Consistent with the diversity of Queens, 56 percent of LaGuardia students are born outside of the United States. More than half are first-generation college students. Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest come from Brooklyn and beyond. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (88 percent), 58 percent are women, and 31 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-eight percent of LaGuardia students are Hispanic, making the college a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Sixty-six percent of LaGuardia students receive financial aid. Slightly less than half attend part-time, often because they need to work to support their families. Under the supervision of the department head of the Center for Career & Professional Development (CCPD), the Work-Based Learning Program Specialist assists with developing and implementing an experiential learning program for the college community. Key elements of the experiential learning program are: (1) assisting students in acquiring experiential learning opportunities related to the career and technical education program they are enrolled in; (2) building partnerships with employers to develop experiential learning opportunities; (3) assisting students with job readiness services and connections to internship and employment opportunities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Individual/group advisement for students interested in experiential learning, develop and facilitate innovative workshops, and assists to develop, and advertise the experiential learning career information resources available through career and employment services;
• Assist students by conducting resume/cover letter critiques and job-search strategies and providing guidance regarding application procedures and university recognition;
• Facilitate placement of students in positions related to their academic major or certification, monitor students' on-site assignments, and develop support documentation for academic credit and/or university recognition;
• Maintain accurate records of student information. Maintain up-to-date written guidelines outlining procedures to be used: application and qualification process, course/work schedules, date/calendar/deadlines, standard forms (job descriptions and liability agreements), outline expectations/requirements for students, employers, advisers, and administrators; circulate program descriptions through publications and electronic media;
• Maintain critical communications with supporting departments, i.e., financial aid, enrollment management, LAGCC Foundation, ACE scholarships, and MOU credit;
• Collaborate with other departments/student services to effectively market experiential learning through outreach programming. Promote the accessibility of experiential learning postings as well as experiential learning job-search strategies;
• Conduct outreach to current/prospective students and family members to promote the benefits of experiential learning;
• Coordinate promotional materials, i.e., news releases directed to college administrators, faculty liaisons, student organizations, and targeted student populations. Direct special efforts to promote full use of career and employment services by students;
• Coordinate career events to include such activities as a part-time job expo, volunteer service fair, and related experiential learning events;
• Conduct assessment and follow-up studies through electronic communications, direct mail, telecommunications, and classroom visits (coordinated with Career Services administrative staff members) of all degree and non-degree students to determine employment/service experience and salary. In coordination with director, employer relations, conduct assessment and follow-up studies with employers;
• Identify appropriate library and web-based resources;
• Conduct site visits to include campus, local, and regional employers to maintain relations as well as further expand experiential learning opportunities, promoting out-of-the-classroom experience and learning activity related to students' academic studies and career direction;
• Participate in area business, not-for-profit associations, and chamber of commerce activities with emphasis on relationship development;
• Provide input into program administration and ongoing employer relations;
• Participate in staff activities/meetings, an annual performance evaluation, and professional development activities including involvement in state, regional, and national associations;

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and four years related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A master's degree (emphasis in student affairs, marketing, human resource management, or related field).
• Three to four years of experience in a business or career office setting.
• Strong organization, written, and oral communication skills, demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail.
• A motivated/enthusiastic work style, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a broad range of internal and external constituents.

• Represents career office on college committees, conferences, and to the College community at large
• Conducts outreach programming, orienting employers and other constituents to services
• Performs related duties as assigned.
