Job Summary:

Northwestern University’s Division of Student Affairs is in search of a values-driven, innovative, and student-centered leader to serve as the Director of Social Justice Education. Reporting to the Executive Director for Campus Inclusion and Community, the Director of Social Justice Education will join a team of professionals from the areas of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) and Student Enrichment Services (SES). These three areas together comprise Campus Inclusion and Community (CIC) and are committed to creating a more inclusive learning environment for all our students through work focused on advocacy and education in the areas of equity, access, leadership development, and intersectionality.

The Director of Social Justice Education (SJE) is responsible for providing vision and strategic implementation of the unit’s goals, supervision of professional staff, and establishing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders. The Director of SJE will continue to refine and communicate the scope of the unit to meet the ever-evolving needs of the undergraduate student body, while supporting staff capacity. The Director of SJE will directly supervise professional staff, and indirectly supervise graduate and undergraduate student staff. The Director will lead the next evolution of SJE, which will involve the establishment of credit-bearing opportunities for undergraduate students, in partnership with academic administrators and faculty. Likewise, the Director of SJE will lead the team in designing intergroup dialogue opportunities with the goal of providing both co-curricular and credit-bearing experiences. The Director of SJE will also partake in organizational development through fundraising. Finally, the Director of SJE will lead the team in developing programs and initiatives aimed at engaging and educating students on topics related to social identities, power, privilege, and inclusion.

The Director of SJE will serve as a member of the Campus Inclusion and Community Leadership Team alongside the Directors of Multicultural Student Affairs and Student Enrichment Services. The Director of SJE will be responsible for the stewardship of donor funds and maintaining a close relationship with Alumni Relations and Development and donors. Additionally, the Director of SJE will be responsible for (a) helping to provide vision and scope to new and existing innovative tools and programs for getting students involved in social justice work, (b) championing academic integration initiatives, and (c) managing the administrative functions of Social Justice Education, including budgetary oversight, management of staff, and university-wide community service.

Pay Range: The salary range for the Director of Social Justice Education position is $98,447-$105,000.

Principal Accountabilities:

1. (35%) Provide leadership for and effective management of Social Justice Education by:

   1. Contributing to the vision, mission, and goals of the division to guide program development, service delivery, and student support
   2. Evaluating program performance with emphasis on student impact; defining key learning outcomes and key performance indicators while using innovative and adaptive strategies
   3. Preparing and overseeing the SJE budgets. Allocate resources in accordance with strategic and operational objectives.
   4. Supervising two Assistant Directors and an Administrative Assistant
   5. Aligning SJE’s objectives with Division of Student Affairs, Campus Inclusion and Community, and institutional priorities
   6. Proactively and responsibly responding to emerging student needs

2. (25%) Design and implement credit-bearing opportunities for undergraduate students focusing on dialogue, identity development, and social justice. This work includes, but is not limited to, a new curricular program supporting 2^nd year Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and First Generation and Lower-Income (FGLI) students. Oversee, through supervision, programs and initiatives that enhance the co-curricular experience with an emphasis on identity development, social justice education, community and solidarity building.

3. (20%) Serve as a member of the Campus Inclusion & Community Leadership team:

   1. Support the implementation of CIC’s evolving structure
   2. Create opportunities for cross-collaboration and collective advocacy
   3. Maintain consistent communication with CIC leadership team
   4. Serve as a representative for CIC and SJE to the broader University community.
   5. Represent SJE at Division of Student Affairs and University meetings and events as appropriate.

4. (10%) Define student learning objectives and outcomes related to identity development, inclusiveness, and social justice competency by:

   1. Collaborating with Student Affairs colleagues and others in defining and promulgating student learning outcomes
   2. Providing leadership in advancing the assessment of student learning outcomes for Social Justice Education, Campus Inclusion and Community, and the Division of Student Affairs

5. (5%) Stewardship and fundraising

   1. Meet with and cultivate relationships with donors, identified by Alumni Relations and Development, who are interested in supporting social justice efforts.
   2. Serve as a representative to Alumni Relations and Development on behalf of social justice and inclusion initiatives overseen by Social Justice Education, Campus Inclusion & Community, and the Division of Student Affairs’ inclusion initiatives. Communicate priorities and goals to ARD and report outcomes of programs supported by donors and beyond to ARD

6. (5%) Perform other duties as assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree in higher education administration, ethnic studies, gender studies, student affairs, counseling, education or a related field
• Five to seven years of administrative experience building and advancing institutional diversity and inclusion initiatives for students, staff, or faculty
• Experience in supervising, developing, and coaching professional staff and students
• Experience collaborating with faculty and staff members
• Assessment and program evaluation skills and experience
• Significant experience with facilitation in a social justice context
• Experience with designing, implementing, and facilitating intergroup dialogue programs
• Experience supporting credit bearing learning opportunities    
• Experience building/developing workshop and program curriculum related to social justice key concepts and terms
• Experience in supervising, managing, developing and coaching professional staff and students

Minimum Competencies:

• Exceptional leadership, organizational, written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work with diverse campus constituencies around potentially controversial issues
• Demonstrated ability to apply diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice theory to improve and inform student affairs and teaching practice
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
• Demonstrated ability to create learning opportunities that foster equitable participation of all groups while seeking to address and acknowledge issues of oppression, privilege, and power
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations which govern underrepresented and international student populations

Preferred Qualifications:

• Terminal (e.g., MA or PhD) degree in higher education administration, ethnic studies, gender studies, student affairs, counseling, education or a related field
• Demonstrated collaborative team building, a reputation as a positive team player and a commitment to collaboration and integrity
• Demonstrated involvement with local, state, regional and national associations and communities relevant to the role
• Experience working with student organizers/student activist
• Experience facilitating restorative justice processes

Preferred Competencies:

• Demonstrated effectiveness in change management, particularly as it relates to diversity and inclusion initiatives
• Demonstrated ability to make informed decision grounded by data, stakeholder analysis, and student perspective
• Exceptional leadership, organizational, written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work with diverse campus constituencies around potentially controversial issues
• Strong understanding of the educational environment at highly selective institutions.
