Position Summary Apply accounting principles to complete daily, monthly, and yearly accounting tasks to support the Business Office in producing accurate and complete financial reports. Receives direction and support from the assistant controller.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Process the monthly and year-end accounting entries for assigned areas of responsibility such as auxiliary operations, foreign programs, fixed assets, endowment and investments, or debt.
Reconcile and analyze general ledger accounts (bank accounts, deferred gifts, stock gifts, clearing accounts, receivables, inventory, liability, and investment accounts); create and post accounting entries as required.
Manage the accounting process for assigned restricted funds or grant funds, which includes reviewing, interpreting, analyzing, and reporting expenditures, and preparing fund drawdowns.
Administer non-student accounts receivable or loans receivable including billing and collection functions.
Assist departments with financial inquiries (research transactions and initiate correcting entries as needed) and provide end-user guidance on processing financial transactions.
Assist with the month-end financial close process through preparation of journal entries, reviewing certain accounts, and completing processes in the Colleague accounting system.
Review agency account balances. Perform analysis on overspent accounts and communicate with departmental staff in order to bring the accounts into balance.
Work collaboratively with other business office staff. This may include serving as backup to coworkers during absences or busy periods, reviewing the work of clerical employees or student workers, and providing support to Finance colleagues.
Prepare annual IRS tax reporting statements (e.g. 1099s, 1098s) and be knowledgeable of reporting rules to ensure compliance.
Act as a resource and support the accounting needs of student organizations and class years.
Assist in the fiscal year-end close process and related audit. This may include analyzing payments and accounts, running reports, preparing year-end journal entries, adjusting/removing encumbrances, preparing work papers and schedules, testing transactions, coordinating inventory review, or assisting auditors.
Perform other such accounting, financial, or administrative tasks as may be required from time to time by the Controller or Assistant Controller.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field. Applicants who are graduating in the current term will be considered, but degree must be completed prior to hire date.
Working knowledge of general accepted accounting principles.
Must be able to maintain discretion when working with highly sensitive and confidential information.
Must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students.
Excellent attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications
CPA certification or pursuing professional licensure, or Master’s degree in accounting, finance or related field.
Knowledge of payroll policies and basic understanding of state and federal employment laws.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to exercise good judgment and decision making within assigned authority.
Strong prioritization skills to consistently meet deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to use financial systems and information.
Strong proficiency of Microsoft software, particularly Excel.
Work experience in higher education or similar business setting.
