Water Filtration Plant Lead Operator

This position is responsible for providing a lead operation and maintenance role of the University's Water Filtration Plant, including responsibilities associated with direct operation and maintenance of the water filtration plant.

In conjunction with the Water Filter Plant Manager, this position is responsible in a lead role for water quality, production, laboratory analysis, record keeping and administration, equipment maintenance and distribution of potable water in a continuous supply to the entire campus.

• Use knowledge of systems and application of sound judgment to safely respond to all operating scenarios, including emergencies.
• Provide guidance to technical and regulatory questions from staff.
• Responsible to operate all equipment in a safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant manner.
• Responsible for plant security.
• Collect, compile, and verify legally required regulatory data to ensure the safety of the water supply for human consumption.
• Ensure completion and validity of regulatory reports by sampling daily and total monthly chemical amounts for treatment, filter turbidities and chlorine residuals, in preparation for Manager's review for submission to regulatory agencies such as the Department of Health, Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
• Act, as necessary, as the certified representative of the Cornell water system to the Department of Health.
• Perform other duties as required.

This position collaborates with WFP Manager regarding the update of standard operating procedures and various mission critical databases needed for regulatory compliance. Active engagement with University stakeholders, which includes direct involvement with the Fall Creek Watershed group, students, faculty, and multi-departmental staff. This position interacts with vendors, contractors, the Cornell community, and customers on potable water related issues.

This work may be performed on a shift basis, depending on the business needs of the University.

This position is covered by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) bargaining unit. This is a Grade 8 position with an hourly rate of pay of $37.09.

We require these qualifications:

• Associates degree in environmental, biological, chemical, water resources, or related field.
• Five (5) years of equivalent experience in the operation of water treatment or purification equipment in a large purification plant plus an additional year of experience in the operation of the Cornell Water Filtration Plant.
• Possess and maintain a current New York State Water Treatment license, Grade IA required.
• Demonstrated and documented proficiency in production equipment maintenance, water treatment plant operation, chemistry, microbiological and laboratory practices required.
• Ability to understand and translate into action the specific directions and general goals of the plant manager to assure continued efficient system operation.
• Ability to learn new technologies as new systems are introduced to the plant and to train other plant personnel in their use and maintenance.
• Demonstrates the Facilities Services divisional values. • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of the skills necessary to perform maintenance activities. This includes use of such things as hand tools, wrenches, etc.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• New York State (or equivalent) driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 3 months of hire.
