The Section of Infectious Diseases Syndemics Lab at Boston Medical Center is recruiting a talented faculty investigator to join our team and launch their own research career. The Syndemics Lab focuses on producing the evidence base needed to develop new policies, interventions, and approaches to mitigating the harms of the syndemic (synergistic epidemics) of Hepatitis C, HIV, bacterial infections, and substance use disorder. Examples of projects that the lab is working on now include: empirical calibration approaches to age, sex, and race stratified simulation targets for distributional cost-effectiveness analyses; hidden prevalence estimation of substance use disorder and injection drug use; and developing simulation model emulators to support online decision tools for policy makers. Candidates with backgrounds in epidemiology, health policy modeling, biostatistics, applied math, and engineering are encouraged to apply. The position includes protected research time, resources to launch a new group, and the experience, resources, and mentoring of our Syndemics Lab team. The lab has a strong track record of supporting junior invetigators to secure their first grant, including multiple career development awards, and the NIDA Avenir award (DP2). The Syndemics Lab provides research infrastructure and support including access to large databases for comparative effectiveness and healthcare services research, experienced data analysts, and a thriving group of faculty across all career stages who share a commitment to and passion for our work. In addition, the Infectious Diseases Section benefits from the resources and experience of the Providence-Boston Center for AIDS Research, as well as the NIDA-funded Center for Health Economics of Treatment Interventions for Substance Use Disorder, HCV, and HIV (CHERISH). The Syndemics lab includes two PhD biostatisticians who are available for mentorship and career development. In addition, a secondary appointment in the Department of Biostatistics at the BU School of Public Health is possible, with access to all of the conferences and seminars that Biostistics offers. The Syndemics Lab sits in a clinical division, but we have a long track record of using advanced quantitative approaches to solve complex public health challenges, and a strong infrastructure for mentoring PhD faculty. Required Skills We seek a PhD researcher whose work focuses on simulation modeling methodologies to join our team researching infectious complications of substance use disorders. The successful applicant will join our lab and will develop an independent research career. Mentorship will be provided by Syndemics Lab faculty and collaborators in the Departments of Biostatistics at Boston University and Brown University.
