FINANCIAL ASSISTANT 3, Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI), to provide direct support to the senior financial officer (SFO) and post-award financial support for multiple research projects. Responsibilities will include developing in-depth understanding of MIT and sponsor policies/procedures in order to respond to inquiries; monthly financial review and control for all of MKI, resolving issues to ensure cost object expenses and revenues are accurate, timely, complete, and properly documented; approving travel expense vouchers, requisitions, and procurement card charges; preventing or resolving swept charges; reviewing requests for payment before approval and creating them as needed; monitoring cost collector balances before approving transactions and determining the appropriateness of transactions using federal cost principles; maintaining financial documentation and electronic files; supporting the SFO and director of administration and finance with processing cost transfers, requests for sponsor approval of travel and equipment purchases, preparation for audits, fiscal year closing, and development of local policies; Collaborate with MIT central offices as needed to research and resolve issues; communicating with federal sponsors on accounting issues; preparing journal vouchers; and performing other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent; five years’ related financial/accounting experience in an organization with large federally-sponsored research agreements; thorough knowledge of federal cost principles, research terms and conditions, and MIT accounting policies; excellent communication, organizational, accounting, and analytical skills; proven ability to set priorities, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and follow through; attention to detail; and ability to work independently and as part of a team. PREFERRED: bachelor’s degree; experience with Excel, Word, and university accounting and purchasing systems; and proficiency with MIT’s financial software (SAP, Cognos, Concur, Coupa, etc.).
