About the Opportunity

Job Summary:

As part of the Reinventing Local TV News research project, our team is looking for a Visual Content Producer (VCP)/Animator to create dynamic visual content across station partnerships. The ideal candidate for the VCP role should have a background in graphic design, animation, or a related field, at least three years of experience in motion graphics and video production, and be proficient in Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro. The animator should also have a keen eye for design and data visualization and be able to conceptualize and execute visually stunning content that enhances news stories. The VCP/Animator will serve as a research partner as our team examines the future of video news storytelling. This person also understands the latest trends in digital media, and possesses strong technical proficiency in video production and post-production processes.

This full-time (40 hours) benefits eligible position, is an externally funded one- year appointment, subject to renewal on the availability of grant funds.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in producing motion graphics and visual effects for TV, digital, and/or social media platforms

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and Cinema 4D or other 3D animation software

  • Experience adapting their work to different production specifications (web, broadcast), e.g. aspect ratio, color profile, etc.

  • Strong design skills and a solid understanding of motion graphics principles

  • Training in basic data visualization principles

  • Strong personal organization skills; experience managing competing priorities and reporting to multiple stakeholders simultaneously

  • Knowledge of digital streaming platforms and best practices for video content distribution

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines without compromising quality

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within a team environment

  • A creative mindset and the ability to generate fresh ideas and concepts for video content

    Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

    • Collaborate with OTT Streaming Content Producers and other newsroom producers and reporters to conceptualize, plan, and produce animated graphics and visual elements for OTT streaming digital platforms at WCBS-TV in New York, WLS-TV in Chicago, and WCVB-TV in Boston
    • Utilize Adobe Creative Suite, Cinema 4D or other 3D animation software to design and produce motion graphics and video assets to visualize data and help better explain complex topics to viewers through OTT streaming content
    • Independently design and produce motion graphics and video templates as part of the Reinventing Local TV News Project at Northeastern that will be distributed to television stations and video news producers globally to assist them in implementing innovative digital storytelling techniques

    • Collaborate with Northeastern's Underreported Story Generation Team and television newsroom teams in New York, Chicago, and Boston to identify gaps in news coverage and produce visual elements for news stories that are aimed at assisting people to better understand their communities and strengthen democracy

    • Coordinate and organize visual media content and animated graphics for broadcast and digital platforms for distribution to television stations in New York, Chicago, and Boston to be used in stories produced by the stations' OTT Streaming Content producers

    • Work as a liaison between Northeastern's Reinventing Local TV News Project and our partner TV stations to further overall research project goals
