The Human Resources and Academic Personnel department supports the goals and challenges of the law school by providing services that promote a work environment characterized by fair treatment, open communication, personal accountability, trust and mutual respect. Responsibilities

Coordinates and leads the academic search and/or search waiver process, including the drafting and placement of advertisements, drafting of search plans, conducting the initial screening of materials submitted for all Senate and Non-Senate faculty searches at Berkeley Law, assisting in closing recruitments with proper documentation.
Proposes strategies to increase the diversity of applicant pools and/or to improve the search process from year to year.
Supports FAC (Faculty Appointments Committee) and the FAC Chair throughout the year, reviewing applications in AP Recruit for completion, assessing minimum qualifications for applicants, providing administrative support (incl. responding to candidate inquiries, scheduling of FAC meetings, handling travel logistics via ConnexUS and reimbursements, etc.), managing interviews and job talks (incl. faculty and student feedback), and ensuring successful completion of the search report and compliance with AALS and OFEW guidelines.
Serves as the primary contact with candidates and provides information and as feedback as appropriate.
Provides advice and updates to FAC Chair by analyzing and interpreting system-wide and campus policies, collective bargaining agreements, academic personnel procedures and practices, particularly as these pertain to faculty recruitment.
Collects or assists in the collection of materials for Senate faculty appointment cases, including the solicitation of external letters of recommendation. Creates appointment cases in AP Bears and updating cases as needed.
Manages post-offer visits for Senate faculty and the hiring, onboarding, and transition or relocation of new Senate faculty who accept offers to join Berkeley Law.
Counsels new Senate faculty, and non-Senate faculty and other academic appointees as needed, concerning moderate to complex work-related problems, particularly as these pertain to appointment, hiring, onboarding, and faculty offer terms.
Relocation and transition assistance include, but is not limited to:
Leading and facilitating the hiring, onboarding, relocation, and transition of all Senate faculty;
Notifying and partnering with Berkeley Regional Services (BRS) and the UCPath Center as needed;
Collaborating with Operations and Building Services at the School of Law to ensure office space is ready and available for new faculty, that space configuration is addressed along with any equipment needs, and that a mailbox assignment is secured;
Coordinating with IST at Law regarding computer and phone needs;
Notifying Faculty Support Unit (FSU) Manager regarding the need for a new FSU assignment and scheduling introductory meetings;
Coordinating with the Communications team at Law regarding new faculty and website or faculty profile updates;
Coordinating and/or managing instructor information sessions or other relevant training for new faculty;
Submitting reimbursement materials via BearBuy and/or Entertainment and Travel Services Coordinates and manages the submission of academic review cases in AP Bears for Senate faculty.
Serves as secondary administrative support for the Merit Review Advisory Committee (MRAC).
Casework primarily consists of senate faculty, including professors, senior lecturers with security of employment, as well as endowed chair appointments or reappointments, and associate dean appointments or reappointments.
Provides administrative support for faculty discussions of personnel actions. (E.g. attending meetings and taking notes for faculty votes for mid-career reviews or promotions, and creating academic review file to be distributed).
Implements personnel decisions, mostly in partnership with Berkeley Regional Services (BRS), to ensure UCPath reflects current appointment terms.
May assist with non-senate appointments, reviews or promotions as needed, such as for Academic Coordinators, Lectures, Specialists, Librarians, Post-Doctoral Scholars, and other academic series, identifying issues relating to policy and compensation.
Engages in professional development and training opportunities as needed.
Performs additional duties within the scope of this classification as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Working knowledge of and/or ability to learn and ability to apply / interpret organization and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR.
Strong critical thinking skills to address complex issues and present nuanced analyses within policy parameters.
Knowledge of system-wide and campus policies, union contracts, procedures and practices that govern academic HR administration and/or the ability to quickly develop an understanding.
Basic understanding of and/or ability to learn UC's mission and how HR supports this work, as well as the legal and human implications of HR/AP decisions.
Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office, Google Suite, and video conference platforms; Ability to learn new computer programs and software systems.
Knowledge of and experience working with human resources management systems, talent acquisition management systems, and other related business software programs and systems.
Solid critical thinking skills, including sound judgement and decision-making with the ability to correctly identify real and potential problems.
Strong research and analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations to Chairs / unit management.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including political acumen, diplomacy, professional demeanor, and excellent customer service to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to work independently and as a productive member of a team.
Excellent organizational and time management skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes to meet strict deadlines.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong editing and proofreading ability.
Ability to employ active listening skills and the ability to develop persuasive and compelling arguments.
Strong sense of ethics and ability to manage sensitive and confidential information and use a high-level of discretion.
Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), and ability to apply and integrate core concepts of DEIB into everyday practice.
Must demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds present in our community.

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

Working experience coordinating and facilitating recruitments, hiring, onboarding and orientation.
Knowledge of and/or experience working with Academic Personnel policies and procedures.
Knowledge of and experience working with and/or ability to learn various HR and/or campus systems and programs, such as UCPath, AP Recruit, bCourses, and AP Bears.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $34.80 - $39.05.

This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
This is a hybrid position, eligible for 20% remote capability.
