As a member of the School of Social Sciences' leadership team, the incumbent is tasked with upholding and exemplifying excellence in the University's core competencies-- job mastery, goal accomplishment, enterprise contribution and innovation-- while representing the Chair and Department to members of the campus, UC system and the community at large. Manages, plans and administers a range of administrative operations in the Department of Political Science, as well as the research centers associated with the department and, at times, school centers directed by faculty in Political Science. Reporting directly to the Cluster Manager and the department Chair and indirectly to the Assistant Dean, and with general direction, provides additional support to the Department cluster (comprised of the departments of Language Science, Anthropology, Political Science, Economics and Logic and Philosophy of Science). The Manager is tasked with analyzing needs, establishing short and long-range objectives and implementing effective organizational planning to meet instructional, research and programmatic goals of the department. Responsible for the management, strategic planning for - and leadership of - all administrative activities in the department, including fiscal management of departmental finance, payroll, academic/staff/student human resources, internal controls and contract & grant management. Oversees inventories of all departmental space and equipment, as well as their assignment, utilization and safety procedures. Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Solid knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on budget, account and fund management and / or personnel management within labor contract(s) and personnel policy. Solid knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs. Solid interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising, and counseling to effectively motivate others. Solid skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify resolutions. Solid organizational and customer service skills to effectively manage multiple priorities. Solid knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll. Demonstrated skills in employee supervision.
