To be responsible for work involving the planning, design and planting and care of landscape beds and gardens located on university owned property including parks, public buildings, and street right-of-ways in an urban campus setting. To assist the Manager in scheduling, planning, and maintenance operations of the Grounds Department.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS TO INCLUDE:
*Plans and schedules grounds projects, including but not limited to; contributing to landscape layouts, selecting trees, shrubbery, turf, plants, color materials, and ground cover, establishing fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide programs according to federal, state and local codes; developing grounds maintenance specifications and other similar tasks.Refuels trucks and adds other necessary fluids such as oil.
*Assists Manager with planning, organizing, scheduling, assigning, and evaluating the work of groundskeepers and crews engaged in planting and maintaining landscape beds and gardens.
*Uses all landscaping equipment (handheld, power tools, and heavy machinery) to plant, prune, and fertilize trees, shrubs, flowers and other plants.Oversees greenhouse activities such as propagation and growing annual and perennial plants.Drives a truck to pick up, hauls, and delivers supplies, materials, and equipment to a variety of locations on the UAB Campus.
*Calculates cost estimates, procures bids, and purchases horticulture materials and supplies.Assists the Manager with inventory, maintaining records, and preparing reports, and presentations as needed.
*Diagnose, troubleshoots, corrects groundskeeping and landscaping problems to include pest control, soil conditions, drainage, trees shrubbery, turf, perennial and annual plants, color materials and ground covers; treating, training, using, and selecting chemicals necessary to control or prevent disease, fungi, insects or weeds; establishing fertilizer, pesticide, and herbicide programs according to federal, state, and local codes; developing grounds maintenance specifications and other similar tasks.
*Plans and organizes work projects with volunteer groups and other organizations.Keeps abreast of newly developed horticultural techniques and equipment.
*Inspects assigned areas for plant damage, disease, soil erosion, or landscape problems; identify plants, insects, pests and diseases as appropriate; recommend corrective actions such as removal of plans or remedial treatments as appropriate.
*Leads horticultural tours as needed, assist with educational programming and special events.
*Assists in constructions of new landscape areas.
*Performs removal of weeds from grounds, cut grass and trim shrubs.
*Uses assigned communication device to read and respond to texts, e-mails and services requests. Interacts with customers, visitors, students, coworkers and others in a friendly, helpful and professional manner.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

*Ability to read, write and understand basic instructions.
*Ability to maintain a good driving record
*Ability to perform and support horticultural practices that facilitate plant health through understanding soil nutrition, sustainable gardening and Integrated Pest Management.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (Subject to change to meet the needs of the University).
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Landscape/Ornamental Horticulture, Plant Science or a related field and three (3)
years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for the education requirement. In lieu of a degree, a high school diploma or equivalent and seven (7) years related experience is required.
Licenses/Certifications/Registrations:
Currently certified as a Supervisor Pesticide Applicator of Ornamental and Turf Pest Control (OTPS) by the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries required.
MVR:
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver's license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
PERSONAL:
Possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position to include:
*Lifting, moving and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
*Perform tasks requiring climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, and extensive walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.
*Working in the rain and in unfavorable weather conditions, hot, cold, wet, etc.
*Working in confined spaces
*Working within extreme temperature ranges
