Job Description:

The Payroll Tax Compliance Manager will manage the operations of the multi-state taxation process including completing state and local registrations, withholding and remitting payroll taxes and deductions, and meeting reporting requirements to various federal and state tax agencies and labor divisions.  In addition, this position will assist with maintaining and testing systems that process all University payrolls.  The primary emphasis of this position will be to ensure payroll taxes, deductions, related adjustments, fringe benefits, and University filings are processed timely and accurately adhering to University policies; federal, state, and local rules and regulations; and in compliance with Wage and Hour laws both federally and in numerous states.  The Payroll Tax Compliance Manager will be responsible for documenting policies and procedures and training the payroll staff members on taxation.  This position is the back-up to the Payroll Manager. 

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Bachelorâ™s degree with a concentration in accounting, finance or business management, preferred. Equivalent experience/education will be considered for strong candidates. Requires a thorough understanding of the payroll field.
• Thorough working knowledge of payroll computing systems, including ability to analyze and detect errors. Experience with integrated systems, ADP, and Workday preferred.
• At least 5 years of experience in a complex not-for-profit accounting environment, preferably in higher education.
• Ability to work well in a team environment with participants from various fields including but not limited to:  Human Resources, Employee Relations, Tax department, Accounting, Workday Operations, Computing and Information Services, and others within the Finance Division.
• Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
• Significant attention to detail
• Excellent customer relation skills, dealing with individuals in person, through telephone and written correspondence.
• Ability to work well under pressure, with good organizational skills in order to meet critical deadlines.
• Ability to analyze processes and clearly document office procedures.
• Meeting payroll deadlines is essential to the well-being of all University employees.  Working in the Payroll Office requires a commitment that deadlines be met and that paychecks be delivered on time.  At times this requires that Payroll Office employees expend extra effort, work additional hours, or stay open when other offices may close in order to fulfill this objective.  It is important that the individual in this position understand and be committed to the Payroll Office objectives.
