Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati, College of Engineering and Applied Science invites applications for a Research Associate (NE) in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics. This is a half-time (50% of full-time) staff position to support the integration and testing of a new research experimental facility in the Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Systems Lab (IRAS Lab) for space robotics and automation research.

Essential Functions

  • Designs and constructs environment hardware settings based on given test requirements.
  • Integrates individually purchased or developed instruments into a general test system.
  • Develops simple software required for integrating instruments and hardware components.
  • Collects, analyses, and manages equipment's test data and test results.
  • Writes test system's general user's manual and experimental instructions.
  • Creates and modifies 3D solid models of space vehicles and robotic systems for simulation.
  • Creates and edits graphic models and animation videos.
  • Independently works on hardware and software problems encountered in the system integration.
  • Decides how to solve problems and relies on available resources to resolve them.
  • Contributes effectively to the collective research team effort.
  • Monitors the compliance of lab activities to the applicable safety standards and policies. 
  • Updates and maintains the webpage of the IRAS Lab.

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree in a related field.

Required Experience

  • In-depth knowledge of specialized field, process or discipline.
  • May require experience with specialized software programs.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Two years' work experience in an academic lab environment doing experimental work.
  • Two years' experience in an academic research lab doing robotics or mechatronics research.
  • Two years' hands-on experience with design and implementation of hardware test systems. 
  • Familiar with engineering design and 3D modeling software Solid Works, Autodesk inventor and 3D Max, Adobe Photoshop.
  • Programming skill in C/C++, Python, OpenGL.
