The Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality (GCPI) works to alleviate poverty and inequality, advance racial and gender equity, and expand economic inclusion for everyone in the U.S. through rigorous research, analysis, and ambitious policy ideas.

Job Overview

The Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality seeks an Executive Director to lead the Center into its next chapter.

The Executive Director should be a policy expert with a longstanding commitment to racial justice, and a vision for advancing racial and gender equity and expanding economic inclusion for everyone in the U.S.

The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the research and policy work of the Center, ensuring the Center's long term financial and institutional health, and establishing Georgetown Law as a place for developing and advancing transformative policies that address the root causes of poverty and combat structural racism.

Responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
  • Guide the overall vision, mission, strategy, and priorities for all of the Center's work.
  • Oversee the Center's research and policy priorities, projects, and initiatives, including development of policy ideas and the publication of multiple reports every year.
  • Ensure the continued ability of the Center to bring equity focus to poverty & inequality policy ideas and bridge academia and policy to equip policymakers and advocates with rigorous research, trusted analysis, and original policy solutions.
  • Represent the Center to funders, policymakers, advisory boards, external partners, and the media.
  • Fundraise to sustain existing staff and programs, and to support smart growth in the medium and long term;
  • Work with the Deputy Director to oversee the budget, human resources, and general administration of the Center.
  • Provide mentorship and experiential learning opportunities to students.
  • Lead, supervise, and mentor Center staff and students.
  • Lead faculty engagement efforts, including building new relationships with faculty


Work Interactions

Reporting to Peter Edelman, Faculty Director, the Executive Director communicates about the Center's work to the faculty advisors; supervises a Deputy Director and Program Directors; and oversees some substantive work of other senior staff.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • JD, PhD, or Master's degree and equivalent experience
  • At least 10 years of experience on issues related to the Center's mission.
  • At least 4 years of administrative and management experience, in a government, non-profit, or academic context, including experience leading teams and as a direct supervisor to multiple staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience with racial and social justice issues
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and budget management.
  • Established relationships and networks in economic justice and racial equity space
  • A high level of knowledge of a broad range of poverty & inequality issues, and deep expertise in one or more of GCPI areas of focus, including tax, income supports, jobs and education, health and human services, and census and data justice.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, including public speaking experience.
  • Race, class, and gender equity and inclusion experience, skills, and values
  • Experience leading teams, supervising and mentoring staff, and managing projects and programs
  • Ability to lead and work collaboratively.
  • Excellent strategic, organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to make timely, informed decisions using judgment and taking into account the facts, goals, constraints, and risks
  • A positive, collaborative, proactive, forward-thinking mindset and strong organization skills.
  • Flexibility & enthusiasm for learning


Qualifications given special recognition
  • Lived experience with poverty, racism, and sexism.
  • Research and policy publications on subjects related to the Center's mission.
  • Experience in government service, e.g. federal or state agencies and legislatures
