About the Opportunity

Summary:
Working with the Assistant Treasurer, the Director, Investments' job entails planning, organizing and directing cash management structures and programs for the University.
The Director, Investments engages in activities on endowment fund and operating pool investments and provides advice on various financial procedures and methods.
The Director, Investments is responsible in the management of cashflow and investment of surplus types of operating funds. He or she will ensure liquidity and security of University funds, while seeking an optimal level of risk adjusted return.


Duties and Specifications
  • Generate and supervise the generation of financial cash flow and valuation models and perform capital structure analysis to identify assets available for investment.
  • Identify and perform comprehensive due diligence on new investment opportunities.
  • Develop and present to key stakeholders implementation plans to invest University funds in line with existing investment guidelines.
  • Negotiate the sale and/or purchase of securities as needed to implement strategic investment decisions, meet liquidity needs, or endowment requirements.
  • Ensures the reasonableness of fees paid on behalf of managing the University's funds and negotiate fee concessions as necessary.
  • Ensures compliance with existing internal controls, policies and procedures in day-to-day conduct and supervision of investment activities.
  • Recommends and implements improvements to current processes and policies.
  • Build and maintain relationships with interested internal parties, current and potential investment managers, brokers, as well as custodian banks.
  • Leads coordination of external counsel for the review for private investments.
  • Participates in the Board of Trustees' Subcommittee for Funds and Investments meetings for the recording of meeting minutes.
  • Understands and manages appropriate procedures and processes around month-end and quarter-close activity.
  • Acts as lead for all year-end audit processes; synchronizes all activities with external consultants, custodian and accounting teams.
  • Trains treasury staff on developmental goals in support of the University.

Qualifications:
Education and Qualifications

6 - 8 years of investment experience that involved financial, economic analysis, portfolio management, and securities trading.

A Bachelor's degree required; Advanced degree and/or the CFA designation (or progress towards these credentials) is preferred. Master's degree in finance, banking or economics may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Skills and Specifications
  • In depth and current knowledge of macroeconomic environments and an understanding of how economic variables impact portfolio risk exposures.
  • Extensive knowledge of investment portfolio management, specifically fixed income strategies.
  • Must be able to achieve optimal risk adjusted returns.
  • Must know how to negotiate any purchase as well as sales of instruments for investments at a favorable price.
  • Able to utilize computerized investment cash flow schemes and programs, including hardware operation.
  • Must know how to forecast requirements on cash income and outflow.
  • Knows how to prepare accurate financial records.
  • Be able to gather and evaluate evidences and facts.
  • Be adept indrawing logical conclusions and created appropriate recommendations.
  • Must write and speak in a clear and concise manner.
  • Must be able to maintain harmonious work relationships and at the same timework effectively on his/her own.
