Holton-Arms School invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of the Upper School and Dean of Students.  The Assistant Director of the Upper School and Dean of Students reports to the Upper School Director and is an integral member of the Upper School Leadership Team. Working with the Upper School Director, the Assistant Director, and the Dean of Students is responsible for supervising student activity and developing positive, constructive student behavior. 

Primary Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of the Upper School and Dean of Students is responsible for supporting the Director of the Upper School and faculty in programmatic and academic endeavors while upholding the mission of the school

• Supports the Upper School Office Team, oversees Class Dean meetings, and relays important information to students and teachers as appropriate.
• Collaborates with the Upper School Director in hiring and supervising the Upper School leadership team.
• Supervises student attendance and activities both during and after the school day.
• Serves as a liaison between the registrar and faculty to ensure grade verification and changes are timely and accurate.
• Helps to build schedules and staffing models, as well as assessment calendars
• Partners with students, faculty, and staff to ensure assemblies and gatherings are well organized and the content aligned with the goals and objectives of the School and division.
• Along with the Upper School Director, ensures the Student Handbook is reviewed, revised, and updated annually.
• Member of the US Admission Committee
• Member of Senior Project/Experiential Education Committees
• Oversees the Awards process for the US and works with the Advancement office to ensure follow-up and cultivation are on time.
• Helps with preparation and running of the US Awards ceremonies, Convocation, and Commencement
• Operates as an essential partner with the Upper School Division Director, spearheading initiatives, attending and running meetings, and maintaining and editing essential Upper School documents. Acts in their stead when not available.
• Participates in the Upper School community through teaching, coaching, or other instructional activities.

Advises the Student Government Representative Assembly (RA).

• Meets regularly to shape agenda and support the students, as well as advise on roles and responsibilities.
• Plans retreats, Plans the RA student government retreat, which is held prior to the start of school. each year, including making location arrangements, setting the agenda, and leading the retreat discussion and activities.
• Oversees the election process for student government and supervises the elections process and succession planning.

Manages Upper School student behavior and discipline on a proactive and reactive level.

• Has a deep understanding of Social Emotional Learning and its impact on behavior
• Comfortable working with parents to build partnerships around disciplinary actions and restorative justice.
• Responds to any concerns raised by faculty, class deans, students, or parents/guardians regarding student behavior.
• Ability to bring people together to have courageous conversations around difficult topics.
