The Office of Strategic Consulting serves as a resource for UW -Madison campus units, helping to enhance organizational effectiveness by supporting strategic initiatives, change, and improvement efforts while building organizational capacity. The Office's Strategic Initiatives unit, comprised of project managers, project coordinators, and business analysts, supports large, enterprise-wide initiatives.

The Associate Director, Strategic Initiatives, is a key member of the Office of Strategic Consulting's leadership team and plays an important role in ensuring successful delivery of complex, high-impact, enterprise-wide projects. This position reports to and collaborates closely with the Strategic Initiatives Director to design and implement operations that align with and advance strategic priorities. The Associate Director develops operational processes, standards, and tools, and is responsible for ensuring appropriate application of project management methods and standards across initiatives. As a thinking partner to the director, the Associate Director helps establish the strategic direction and vision for the team.

The Associate Director supervises and mentors up to eight members of the Strategic Initiatives team (which currently has 25 members) and encourages and tracks appropriate professional and career development for all staff in the unit. This position also occasionally provides additional surge capacity as a project manager to ensure continuity of operations when needed.

• 5% Engages in strategic planning and policies to ensure the strategic direction supports the needs of stakeholders
• 20% Evaluates, designs, and implements operations to align with the strategic direction
• 5% Establishes goals and priorities for the annual budget for all revenues and expenditures
• 15% Serves as liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the institution
• 20% Ensures that policies, procedures, and standards are maintained and develops processes and procedures to improve the unit
• 15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
• 10% Serves as consultant to provide project management-related expertise regarding high risk, enterprise-wide projects
• 10% Provides project management on a temporary basis as needed to maintain service continuity

REQUIRED:
1. Seven or more years of experience in formal project management environment demonstrating knowledge and skills such as:
a. Knowledge of project management tools, processes, techniques, and best practices.
b. Ability to apply project management frameworks to meet project and program objectives.
c. Effective behaviors and interpersonal skills to successfully manage multiple projects, of varying size and complexity, simultaneously.
d. Strong planning, organizational, and analytical skills.
2. Two or more years of direct supervisory experience, or experience directing and overseeing others' work.
3. Demonstrated ability to successfully lead organizational change.
4. Excellent communication and leadership skills, as demonstrated through successful project delivery and satisfied stakeholders.
5. Demonstrated experience working effectively with senior leaders, serving as a thinking partner and trusted advisor.
6. Willingness and ability to demonstrate the Office of Strategic Consulting's core values of professionalism, partnership, stewardship, inclusion, continuous improvement, results orientation, and community building.

PREFERRED:
1. Strong track record on large-scale project management implementations within complex environments.
2. Three or more years of experience working in non-profit, government, higher-education, or other complex management/governance environment.
3. Strong customer-service orientation, with demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders (internal and external) at all levels of the organization.
4. Previous experience with formal stage & gate processes.
