The Ultrasound Supervisor functions as a highly experienced sonographer, working under the delegated authority of the physician director, and is responsible for the overall daily management of the sonography department at Michigan Medicine's Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center (FDTC). The Ultrasound Supervisor's role and responsibilities extend beyond those of a staff sonographer and are focused on providing leadership to ensure the delivery of safe and efficient patient care. The Ultrasound Supervisor's activities are performed in accordance with facility policies and procedures and applicable professional standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision and Management

• Full-time, weekday presence at the FDTC to ensure that the ultrasound unit is running appropriately. Flexibility present regarding four-day or five-day workweek.
• Responsible for creating sonographer schedules.
• Responsible for reviewing FDTC patient schedules on a weekly basis, in collaboration with the FDTC Director and clerical team, to ensure adequate volume and distribution of patients and sonographers.
• Work collaboratively with the FDTC clerical team, genetic counselors, Michigan Medicine practices and referral practices to ensure appropriate scheduling of patients. 
• Ensure sonographer compliance with clinical and operational protocols, policies, and procedures.
• Ensure sonographer compliance with vacation and leave of absence submissions in a timely manner according to the protocols in place.
• Ensure that sonographers have timely access to equipment, supplies, and logistical support.
• Proficiency with database management (MiChart and ViewPoint).
• Ensure that all staff meet appropriate certification and accreditation standards.
• Responsible for addressing performance issues in accordance with facility policy and procedure with a friendly and non-judgmental approach after a discussion with the FDTC Director/Administrative Manager.
• Provide general supervision and evaluation of junior sonographers with acquiring images (as needed) and finalizing a good quality ultrasound report. Similar support for MFM fellows in-training is expected. 
• Provide general supervision and re-scanning support to the FDTC sonographer staff, MFM fellows, and patients. This includes specific unit assistance during standing physician meeting times.
• Plan orientation and training of new sonographers, MFM fellows and ancillary staff in collaboration with the FDTC Director.
• Exercise responsibility for sonography team building, morale, and performance.
• Provide leadership and direction in developing new approaches for patient care services.
• Provide direction and guidance for departmental workflow and operations.
• Responsible for monitoring sonographer attendance to educational activities and monthly productivity according to the Department?s expectations.
• Provide oversight of clinical placement and training for student sonographers.
• Manage FDTC medical supply stock and orders.  

Equipment Use and Maintenance

• Ensure that ultrasound equipment is functioning properly. 
• Provide education and training to sonographers and trainees in the utilization of new equipment features/benefits or scanning techniques.
• Responsible for the preventive maintenance program for ultrasound equipment.
• Coordinate quality control procedures with Clinical Engineering to determine that ultrasound equipment operates at optimal levels to ensure patient safety.
• Serve as liaison for equipment and reporting system vendors, in collaboration with the FDTC Director.

Documentation and Reporting

• Document any incidental findings that may impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician.
• Oversight of the preparation, maintenance, and accuracy of reports, database records, and logs. 
• Provide oversight for facility imaging archive process and image requests.

Quality Assessment/Quality Improvement, in collaboration with the FDTC Director

• Ensure that the sonography examination results meet the facility standard for quality assurance before findings are released for interpretation.
• Work with physician team to ensure quality patient care.
• Function as a technical or clinical leader/expert in sonography.
• Creation, oversight, and implementation of scanning protocols and quality control and improvement activities.
• Provide technical, image quality, and accuracy oversight for the assessment of sonography examinations.
• Ensure that appropriate accreditation is secured and maintained.
• Pursue and maintain cutting-edge technical and clinical updates.
• Assist with review and completion of RL incident reports, as appropriate.

Professional Development

• Responsible for the mentoring and professional development of staff.
• Ensure that staff professional education requirements are met and maintained, including applicable licensure, certification, and/or accreditation standards.
• Assist with sonography research projects when possible.
• Provide oversight for the staff continuing education program to ensure professional knowledge, expertise, and skills are maintained.

Health Care Team Interaction

• Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with co-workers, administrators, and other members of the health care team. Assist in the education and training of sonography students, physician residents and fellows, and other learners that engage with Obstetric Sonography. 
• Serve as the representative and advocate with other internal or external members of the health care team.

EDUCATION

• Extensive sonography education, training, and experience in the specialty area(s) to be performed.
• Demonstrated competence in the specialty area(s) to be performed, including sonographer certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and a minimum 5 years? experience in high-risk obstetrical ultrasound required.
• Experience in the supervision of sonographers is preferred.
• Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and lifelong learning (e.g., continuing medical education in the specialty area(s) preformed, higher education, research, writing, speaking, training, etc.)
• Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills and software programs for documentation activities and report generation.
• State sonographer licensure, where applicable.
• Ability to provide ultrasound guidance for basic and advanced invasive procedures and demonstrate proficiency in three- and four-dimensional imaging, and obstetrical Doppler studies. Proficiency in fetal echocardiography or willingness to acquire fetal echocardiography skillset is preferred.
   

WORK CONDITIONS: 

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include 20/40 vision and the ability to adjust focus.  
• The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
• Work is indoors. Travel to satellite offices in the greater Ann Arbor region may be required in the future.
• Standard office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Flexibility to work hours may be required to meet the demands of the position during peak times.
