This position will be responsible for oversight of staff and facility management for all CVM Animal Resources units. Specific responsibilities include the following:

Directs and coordinates college-wide facility operations for NCSU CVM Animal Resources including husbandry, training, administrative, and ancillary services
Responsible for strategic and budgetary planning creation and execution of new programs
Plan, coordinate and integrate services to support collaboration with other NCSU CVM departments as well as other university colleges.
Maintain accountability for finances, including review of departmental usage, expenses and revenue
Make recommendations for financial support, capital purchases, with operational changes with financial justifications
Submit financial metrics as requested by the Director or Deans.
Provides oversight of the operations manager/director(s) and supervisors responsible for the coordination of operations and maintenance of LAR, TAU, and RCF
Assisting with professional development and work plan implementation for staff to support operational workflow.
Assist in the evaluation of staff performance, providing ongoing staff mentoring and counseling as required.
Investigate and address any client and staff concerns, implementing changes as required, monitoring effectiveness of solutions, and communicating recommendations to the CVM Animal Resources Director.
Develop, implement, and evaluate laboratory and departmental policies and standard operating procedures to provide superior quality results and service to clients.
Provides direction and oversight of facility construction and renovation
Coordination and management of all projects, especially those of large scope
Coordinates and develops security and emergency planning.
Act as a resource and liaison to staff, clients, and the research community.
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, a collegial attitude, and ability to successfully work with faculty, staff, and trainees.
Present information to Deans, CVM Animal Resources Director, faculty, staff, and clients as required.

The Director of Operations directly supervises 2-3 unit manager/directors employees and indirectly supervises approximately 30 full-time, permanent staff and a 10-20 students reporting to those individuals.

Minimum Education and Experience	Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other Required Qualifications	Knowledge of and expertise with in-vivo techniques for research, experience with protocol review and preparation Demonstrated ability to manage a team, including entry-level positions as well as supervisory roles. To include, involving new talent, employee engagement, and career development. Demonstrated ability to create/implement new programs in adherence to established policies and procedures Demonstrated ability to plan and monitor the use of expenditures and prepare budget documents and reports. Excellent oral and written communication skills Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service-oriented, rapidly changing environment to accomplish mutual goals Ability to work independently and effectively across organizational lines and in collaboration with colleagues throughout the organization Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills; aptitude for detailed work Project management skills/experience
Preferred Qualifications	Previous experience in a supervisory role, post-baccalaureate degree in relevant field, five or more years of relevant experience Management training or formal leadership certification Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level, certification by AALAS at the Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) level

About North Carolina State University

The North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking to hire an Operations Director to oversee animal husbandry across our three animal care units – Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR), Teaching Animal Unit (TAU), and Reedy Creek Equine Farm (RCF). Species include traditional laboratory animal species and agricultural animals to include poultry, swine, dairy/beef cattle, small ruminants, and horses. Animals housed within this program are also used biomedical research, teaching and for agricultural research. The successful candidate will join a team of three veterinarians, an operations manager, farm director, unit supervisors, and a team of animal care and husbandry technicians. The term “animal resources” includes not only animal housing facilities, but also animal husbandry services, veterinary care, technical services, expertise in teaching/research/ animal technology and medicine, and assurance of compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies for animal care and use.
