About the New Jersey Population Health (NJHealth) Cohort Study: The overarching goal of the NJHealth Study is to produce practical, actionable information for improving population health, well-being, and health equity. The study aims to a) discover the ways that stressors over the life course at the personal, interpersonal, societal levels effect health, and b) identify factors that buffer or amplify how stressors influence health. Recruitment for the NJHealth Study began in 2022 and will span several years. The study will ultimately include about 10,000 community-dwelling New Jersey residents aged 14 and above. About 60% of participants are selected probabilistically to represent the state's geographic and demographic diversity, and the remaining participants are recruited using purposive sampling methods to include immigrants from nine sending countries (China, Dominican Republic, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, and the Philippines) or who entered the US as a refugee or asylee. Both samples are designed to ensure inclusion of multi-generational families, in which multiple family members are recruited. The NJHealth Study is unique in its breadth of data collected, including in-depth interviews, genetic markers from saliva samples, biomarkers measured in blood samples, physical activity and sleep measured using actigraphy watches and GPS devices, and extensive secondary data linkages at the study participant and geographic levels. Participant-level linkage include administrative records (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance, and hospital charity care claims, social services participation data) and clinical data (electronic health records, COVID-19 and cancer registry data, and birth and death records). Community/neighborhood level linkage can be used to examine the impacts of climate events, traffic and transit, crime, healthy food availability, racial/ethnic segregation, and other factors. The full initial round of NJHealth Study data collection is funded by a major grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with substantial additional resources from Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. The study is a signature initiative of Rutgers Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research and is being led by senior investigators from the IFH, the School of Public Health, and the Department of Sociology at Rutgers. Duties of the Position Related to the Cohort Study: · Member of the NJHealth Study leadership team guiding its scientific direction. · Lead and contribute to the NJHealth Study by a) authoring and co-authoring peer-reviewed journal manuscripts; b) developing and contributing to NIH and other grant proposals drawing on the NJHealth Study, including generating funds for future rounds of data collection; and c) engaging in translational communication with NJHealth Study participants and community and policy stakeholders. · Maintain an excellent record of scholarly publication in high-impact journals and engage in active leadership in their discipline and areas of expertise. · Develop an independent extramurally funded program of research on highly significant population health and health equity questions, including but not limited to work drawing on the NJHealth Study. · Contribute to the educational and service missions of the IFH, CSHP, and the department to which they are jointly appointed, including providing mentorship and professional development support for staff, post-doctoral fellows, and early-stage faculty, as appropriate. Successful applicant(s) will be provided with a start-up package which they may use to support professional development activities and advance their independent research program.
